While early renders of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s showed a ‘notch’ for the front camera at the top-right corner, it seems that the final product won’t feature that aspect of design. New teaser posters for the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s have emerged on Weibo, and show the phone without the notch. Instead, the phone’s design appears similar to that of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, with the screen stretching all the way to the top and a small strip of non-screen space just below the screen.
With this, it seems all but confirmed that Xiaomi is staying away from the ‘notch’ trend that has been made popular by the Apple iPhone X. Instead, the Mi MIX 2 will likely be designed similar to last year’s Xiaomi Mi MIX 2. This would mean that the front camera of the phone continues to be placed at the bottom, which has been criticized by users as being too awkward a place for the camera. When taking regular selfies through the camera app on the Mi MIX 2, the phone prompts users to flip the phone over so as the place the camera in a more typical position, or take photos in landscape mode. However, this isn’t possible with other photography-related apps such as Instagram and Snapchat.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s comes only months after the Mi MIX 2, which was launched globally in September and in India in October at Rs 35,999. The phone has since had a price reduction, and is now available for Rs 32,999. The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, and comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage in India. The Mi MIX 2s is expected to come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, along with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, although it is unclear if the phone will launch in India with these specifications, or indeed launch in India at all.
The first Xiaomi Mi MIX launched in 2016 pioneered the tall-screen and bezel-less design language, and was the first Android smartphone to go beyond the 16:9 screen aspect ratio that has long been the norm for devices on the platform. The Mi MIX 2 comes with a 6-inch 18:9 full-HD+ screen, and the Mi MIX 2s is expected to feature the same screen specifications. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s will be launched on March 27 at an event in Shanghai, China.
