5G connectivity is still a few months away, if not years, but that hasn’t stopped smartphone makers from being ready for the roll-out. And while earlier reports indicated that smartphone makers – including OnePlus and Oppo – could be targeting early 2019 for the roll-out of their 5G smartphones, we might well see a 5G-ready smartphone in 2018 itself. A new report indicates that Xiaomi is already testing 5G connectivity on its upcoming flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3.
An image, shared on various platforms including Telegram and Weibo, shows a rather low-resolution image of a Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 with testing equipment in the background. The smartphone is shown running a Chinese version of MIUI, and in the top right corner an indicator shows that the phone is connected to a 5G+ network.
Considering that the image appears genuine, this could be the surest sign of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 coming with 5G connectivity enabled out of the box.
Of course, 5G networks are nowhere near rolling out. Although the earliest roll-out of 5G could take place in certain markets as early as next year, India could only have its 5G infrastructure ready by 2020. While having 5G-ready smartphones may not make much of a difference immediately, compatibility for the next-generation network will be a USP for many smartphones going into 2019.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 was revealed recently by the company’s president through a teaser posted on Weibo, and shows a sliding module at the back of the phone that reveals the front camera. Apart from that, the phone features an edge-to-edge screen with slim bezels, and could well sport the highest screen-to-body ratio of any smartphone thus far. 5G connectivity on the device could be yet another feather in Xiaomi’s cap, which would make it among the first manufacturers to roll-out a 5G-ready smartphone.
