Xiaomi had surprised everyone with its unique near bezel-less smartphone, Mi MIX, which launched in China last month. While the smartphone is available only in China, it met with overwhelming response around the world. Weeks after the launch, Xiaomi is now being rumored to launch a new variant of the Mi MIX that will feature a smaller display. It is worth pointing out that the Mi MIX is a large-screen smartphone with a 6.4-inch display. Reports suggest that Xiaomi might go for a 5.5-inch display for the new Mi MIX. The 5.5-inch display is obviously no small, but has become more of a standard for smartphones nowadays. The new variant is reportedly going to be launched as the Mi MIX Mini. Leaked images of the Mi MIX Mini have already surfaced online. As spotted by mydrivers.com, the smartphone bears the nano codename. From what you can see in the pictures below, the smaller version looks quite smaller to the original Mi MIX. While the images do not give away a lot of details about the design but does reveal some specifications of the new Mi MIX variant. According to the leak, the Mi MIX Mini will be powered by Qualcomm’s top-end Snapdragon 821 processor along with 4GB of RAM. It will come with 64GB of onboard storage. Except for these, there aren’t more details about the smartphone at the moment. It is speculated that the Mi MIX Mini will retain the design language of the original one, but will slightly toned down specifications. Xiaomi is expected to introduce the smartphone before end of this year.
Xiaomi Mi MIX specifications
Launched last month, the Mi MIX comes with a 6.4-inch near bezel-less display with screen-to-body ratio of 91.3 percent. The smartphone runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 processor paired with 4GB of RAM. It comes with 128GB of onboard storage. There’s also a Pro variant of the smartphone that features 6GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. The Pro variant has the camera ring and the fingerprint scanner ring made from 18K gold.
On the camera front, the Mi MIX is equipped with a 16-megapixel rear camera with phase detection auto-focus (PDAF) and dual tone LED flash. Up front, there is a 5-megapixel camera. The smartphone includes options such as 4G LTE, VoLTE, Bluetooth, GPS, USB Type-C port and Wi-Fi 802.11ac. Armed with 4,400mAh battery, the smartphone comes with Quick Charge 3.0 support. With Xiaomi has set the trend with its Mi MIX bezel-less phone, others seem to join the bandwagon as well. Recently we have come across rumors that Meizu will be launching a smartphone that will compete with the Mi MIX. Few leaked teasers in the past suggest that Meizu’s bezel-less smartphone could launch on December 24, 2016.
The image of the Meizu bezel-less phone on Weibo shows a smartphone with a high screen to body ratio. And if the pictures are to be believed, the Meizu phone will have an even higher screen to body ratio than the Xiaomi Mi MIX. The Meizu bezel-less smartphone is expected to come with fingerprint scanner embedded in the display, which could possibly be Qualcomm s ultrasonic scanner.
Not just that, recently, reports also says that ZTE s sub-brand nubia is also rumored to unveil a new smartphone with a bezel-less display in India soon. From what we know so far, the device could feature Frame interactive Technology 2.0 (FiT 2.0) with a Handheld Electronic Aperture with aircraft-grade aluminum alloy. The smartphone is said to sport a 16-megapixel rear camera, which uses a Sony IMX298 sensor. It will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based nubia UI 4.0 out-of-the-box. The smartphone is expected to be paired with 6GB RAM along with 64GB internal storage.
