Xiaomi’s Mi MIX has been under the limelight ever since its launch, and things are only getting better for the bezel-less smartphone. Reports online claim that Xiaomi is preloading the smartphone with Cortana. In fact, the smartphone is also bundled with a bunch of other Microsoft apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook Email. The bundling of Microsoft’s suite of apps and Cortana on the Mi MIX is part of a cross-licensing agreement signed with Xiaomi back in June this year. As a part of this deal, Microsoft sold nearly 1,500 patents to Xiaomi for a variety of technologies such as video, cloud, multimedia and wireless communications. The Mi MIX isn’t the first Xiaomi smartphone to benefit from this deal, and other devices like the Mi 5, Mi Max, Mi 4s, Redmi 3 and the Redmi Note 3 too have been bundled with Microsoft’s suite of apps. In fact, Xiaomi had even collaborated with Microsoft last year to create a Windows 10 Mobile ROM for the Mi 4 smartphone. What started out as a concept smartphone, is already creating waves in China. Looking at the Mi MIX, Xiaomi’s rivals like Meizu and Huawei are also believed to be working on smartphones with bezel-less display. The Mi MIX was launched in China last month, and its talking point is the 6.4-inch near bezel-less display with 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio. Since the display takes over the entire front panel, the device uses advanced receiver-less sound transmission for delivering audio to your ears, and ultrasonic technology for proximity sensor, which is hidden below the display.
As far as the rest of the specifications are concerned, the Xiaomi Mi MIX is powered by Qualcomm s powerful Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB onboard storage. There is also a ‘Pro’ variant, which features 6GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. The smartphone also features 16-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel selfie camera placed below the screen, 4,400mAh battery, and connectivity options like 4G with VoLTE support, Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and USB Type-C port. On the software front, it runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow-based MIUI 8.
There’s currently no word on whether Xiaomi plans to launch the Mi MIX in other countries, including India. But in the meanwhile, there are rumors about a mini variant, dubbed Mi MIX Nano. As the name suggests, this variant will come with a 5.5-inch display instead of the bigger 6.4-inch display. The rest of the specifications and features however are expected to remain the same.
Interestingly, Xiaomi’s marketing director, Zang Zhiyuan took to Weibo to put up a post that read, “There’s no such product as Xiaomi Mi Mix Nano.” Now there are two ways of looking at this. Either Xiaomi has no real plans to launch a mini variant of the Mi MIX, or there is indeed a mini variant in the pipeline, but it won’t be called the Mi MIX Nano. Either ways, we will have to wait till Xiaomi announces its plans to launch the smartphone.
