Xiaomi plans to launch Redmi Android One smartphones, CEO Lei Jun reveals

After the Mi A1, we could see more Android One smartphones from Xiaomi in India, including in the Redmi series.

Last year, Xiaomi launched the Mi A1 smartphone in India. The talking point of the dual-camera totting device was that it was a part of Google’s Android One initiative. In other words, the device ran stock Android OS. If like me, you too were impressed with the stock Android experience on a Xiaomi smartphone, then here’s some good news. You could soon get the experience on a Redmi device.

During a conversation with media persons at Xiaomi’s new HQ in Bengaluru, co-founder and CEO Lei Jun hinted at a possibility of a Redmi Android One device. On being asked whether users in India would see smartphones from Xiaomi’s Redmi series running on stock Android, Jun responded positively. “Yes, we plan to have more Android One devices,” Jun said. “There are still quite a few users in India who prefer Android One.”

While there are those who prefer the feature-rich MIUI, there seems to be a majority (including yours truly) who prefer the stock Android experience. Interestingly, Xiaomi had put up a Twitter poll asking fans to choose between stock Android and custom UI. The company though had to take it down when the poll results showed a majority siding with stock Android.

The simplicity and the smoothness of the stock Android is what has drawn people to smartphones from Google’s Nexus and Pixel range, as well as the recent Nokia smartphones. Another advantage of stock Android is timely updates. The Mi A1, for example, was among the first Xiaomi devices to get the Android Oreo update.

Lei Jun wouldn’t reveal any specifics about Xiaomi’s Android One plans. But going by the recent rumours, the next Android One device from Xiaomi could be the Mi A2. This is essentially likely to be a rebranded version of the Mi 6X smartphone that will be launched in China on April 25.
