Xiaomi, the fourth largest smartphone maker globally, is known for its Redmi and Mi series of smartphones. But the company has tried new device lineup in the form of the BlackShark gaming phone and Poco F1 that diverge from what Xiaomi predominantly offers in its product portfolio. Now, a rumor originating from China suggests that the Chinese smartphone maker could add another series to that product lineup.
According to a Weibo user, Xiaomi‘s upcoming smartphone range will be called “Xiaomi Play” and the first device is rumored to arrive at an event that is set to take place between December 17 and December 26. The device could be Xiaomi’s offering ahead of the Christmas Eve but the details regarding the product or its positioning remain scant at this moment.
The name alone suggests that the Play series could be aimed at mobile gaming enthusiasts. However, Xiaomi backed BlackShark already sells smartphones aimed at gamers and its Poco F1 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 works well for gamers as well. It is not clear how the new Play series will differ from its existing performance devices.
The Weibo listing spotted by Playfuldroid does not share specifications or price of Xiaomi’s upcoming smartphone. While most rumors suggest it will be another gaming-centric smartphone, there is also a possibility that Xiaomi is simply trying to catch up with Huawei’s Honor, which also has a Play series of smartphones.

We will have to wait for few more days before details emerge about this upcoming smartphone series from Xiaomi. Considering that gaming smartphones are becoming a rage among consumers, there is a possibility that Xiaomi is expanding its portfolio across device segments that include the BlackShark Helo starting at RMB 3,199 (around Rs 32,000) and Poco F1, which starts at RMB 1,999 (around Rs 20,000).
