Xiaomi Redmi 2 vs Redmi 1S: Specifications, features compared


Earlier today, Xiaomi launched the Redmi 2 in China, which is essentially the successor to the Redmi 1S. The new smartphone retains the affordable price tag and brings a 64-bit chipset and LTE connectivity into the mix. The Redmi 1S is available in India via Flipkart with a price tag of Rs 5,999. The Redmi 2, on the other hand, is priced at 699 Yuan, which roughly translates to Rs 7,100.


Xiaomi has shed some kilos on the new smartphone, which is also a bit smaller than its predecessor. The Redmi 1S features dimensions of 137x69x9.9mm, while the Redmi 2 features dimensions of 134×67.2×9.4mm. In terms of weight, the Redmi 2 is lighter at 133 grams, as compared to the 158 grams of the Redmi 1S.


This is one of the aspects that is the same as before. Both the devices feature a 4.7-inch IPS display with HD (1280×720 pixels) resolution. Both displays have a pixel density of 312ppi and feature Dragontrail glass protection.


The Redmi 2 is powered by an improved 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor with 64-bit capabilities. In comparison, the Redmi 1S is powered by a 1.6GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor. The former is paired with an Adreno 306 GPU and 1GB of RAM, while the latter is paired with an Adreno 305 GPU and 1GB of RAM.


This is another feature that is carried forward from the Redmi 1S. Both the devices feature 8GB internal storage that can be expanded using a microSD card.


At the back, both the devices feature an 8-megapixel snapper. On the front however, things have improved a bit. Where the Redmi 1S features a 1.6-megapixel snapper, the Redmi 2 features a 2-megapixel snapper.


The Redmi 2 features a slightly bigger 2,200mAh battery, in comparison to the 2,000mAh battery powering its predecessor.

Connectivity and Software

One of the biggest aspects that differentiate the two smartphones is the support for 4G on the Redmi 2. The new smartphone supports both TDD-LTE, and FDD-LTE networks. The rest of the connectivity options remain the same dual-SIM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0.

On the software front, the Redmi 1S runs on MIUI 5 ROM based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, while the Redmi 2 runs on the company s latest MIUI 6 ROM based on 4.4 KitKat.
