Xiaomi has tasted massive success with its budget Redmi series of smartphones. The company has said it has sold 110 million Redmi smartphones globally since the debut of the first Redmi smartphone in 2013. Aiming to build on the success and taking the competition in the budget segment to a new level, Xiaomi today launched the Redmi 3s and Redmi 3s Prime smartphones in India. The Redmi 3s and Redmi 3s Prime come with a similar set of specifications except for the fact that the former comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage and the latter with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage and fingerprint scanner. Other than these top features of the smartphone include metal unibody, 5-inch HD display, VoLTE support and 4,000/4,100mAh battery. As mentioned earlier, the Redmi 3s series look to redefine the budget smartphone category, but it goes without saying the smartphones will face some serious competition from the existing high-specced smartphones in the market. Ahead of the Redmi 3s launch, Lenovo had upped the ante with a refreshed version of the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus, which now has 3GB of RAM and supports expandable storage up to 128GB via microSD instead of 32GB. Price of the Vibe K5 Plus has remained unchanged at Rs 8,499. Let’s take a look at the competition that the Redmi 3s Prime will face. Do note we have taken the higher variant, the Redmi 3s Prime, into consideration for this comparison.
Display: The Redmi 3s is the only smartphone in this comparison to feature a HD (720p) resolution display. The Note 3 Plus and the Vibe K5 Plus, on the other hand, both feature a full HD (1080p) resolution display.
Processor, RAM and storage: The Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor with Adreno 505 GPU coupled with 3GB of RAM. The competing Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 octa-core processor paired with 3GB of RAM and Adreno 405 GPU. The Coolpad Note 3 Plus has MediaTek MT675 processor with 3GB of RAM.
The Redmi 3s Prime comes with 32GB storage and comes with microSD support for expandable storage up to 128GB via microSD. As mentioned earlier, the refreshed Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus comes with 16GB of onboard storage and supports expandable storage up to 128GB via microSD. The Coolpad Note 3 Plus has 16GB of internal storage, and supports expandable storage up to 64GB.
Cameras: The Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime has 13-megapixel rear camera with PDAF and a 5-megapixel front facing camera. Both cameras come with full HD video recording support. The Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus has a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel selfie camera. The Coolpad Note 3 Plus also comes with 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front facing cameras.
Battery: The Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime aims to take an edge over the competition with a massive 4,000mAh battery. The competing smartphones Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus, and Coolpad Note 3 Plus come with 2,750mAh and 3,000mAh batteries respectively.
Operating System: Lenovo, and Coolpad’s smartphones both run on Android Lollipop wrapped under their respective UIs. The Xiaomi’s Redmi 3s Prime however runs on MIUI based on Android Marshmallow. As for the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus, it runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop wrapped under Vibe UI. As mentioned above, Coolpad Note 3 Plus runs runs on Android 5.1 with CoolUI 6.0 on top.
Others: The Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime comes with features like fingerprint scanner and VoLTE support. The Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus doesn’t have the fingerprint scanner. But the Coolpad Note 3 Plus come with the fingerprint scanner feature.
Overall, the Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime aims to set a new benchmark in the budget category by packing powerful punch of features, especially like VoLTE support and fingerprint scanner. But that said, the competition does seem to match in bits and parts with what the Redmi 3s offers.
