Xiaomi today launched its ‘Made in India’ Redmi 5A smartphone. The ‘Desh ka Smartphone’ is a budget handset targeted at the early adopters. The phone will take on the likes of Nokia 2 and Moto C Plus which are priced in the same price category. Here’s how these compete against each other on varied aspects.

Pricing and availability

Xiaomi Redmi 5A is priced at Rs 5,999 for the 2GB/16GB variant and Rs 6,999 for the 3GB/32GB variant. As part of the launch offer, the phone is being offered at an effective price of Rs 4,999 for the base model on mi.com. It will start selling from December 7 through Flipkart and mi.com, as well as all of Xiaomi’s offline stores and partners.

The Nokia 2, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 6,999, and available at major retail stores across India. The Moto C Plus also carries the same price tag at Rs 6,999, but is available exclusively via Flipkart.

Design and display

The Redmi 5A retains the 5-inch HD display as seen on the Redmi 4A. However, the display now comes with an eye protection mode. The antenna lines now sit below the rear camera lens. One of the key changes this time around is that it now flaunts a metallic design as opposed to the polycarbonate body on the Redmi 4A.

Nokia 2 also packs a 5-inch LTPS HD (1280×720 pixels) display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, while the Moto C Plus features the same 5-inch HD display, but without Gorilla Glass protection.

Chipset, RAM, and storage

Redmi 5A is available in two models with 2GB/3GB of RAM with 16GB/32GB of internal expandable storage. Unlike its international variant, the one sold in India features dedicated slots for both storage expansion and dual SIM cards. The phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC.

Nokia 2, in comparison, is equipped with the entry-level Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 SoC which is paired with a mere 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage that can be expanded using a microSD card. Moto C Plus, on the other hand, is powered by a 1.35GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6737 SoC paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, which is expandable up to 32GB via microSD card.

Camera

Redmi 5A bundles a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture with LED flash. It comes with features such as burst mode, HDR mode, and panorama mode among others. Up front, there is a 5-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture.

Nokia 2 features an 8-megapixel rear camera, along with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The Moto C Plus also features an 8-megapixel rear camera, but has an even lower 2-megapixel camera on the front.

Battery

Xiaomi has downgraded the battery capacity in the Redmi 5A, which now stands at 3,000mAh as opposed to 3,120mAh in the predecessor. This is the lowest in comparison with the Nokia 2 which bundles a 4,100mAh battery, and Moto C Plus which is powered by a 4,000mAh battery.

Software and connectivity

Redmi 5A runs Android 7.1 Nougat with MIUI 9 layered above, While Nokia 2 runs stock Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box, and so does the Moto C Plus. None of the three smartphones feature a fingerprint sensor. In terms of connectivity, all offer dual-SIM support, and 4G VoLTE.
