As expected, Xiaomi has launched the Redmi 6 smartphone alongside Redmi 6A in China. The smartphone is the successor to Redmi 5, which was launched last year in the country. The Chinese smartphone maker seems to be adopting a six month refresh cycle as opposed to annual refresh with its Redmi series.
Since it is a mid-cycle refresh, the Redmi 6 does not seem to be bringing major changes. The smartphone builds on the design language of previous Redmi smartphones but gets dual rear camera setup, which puts it in-line with Redmi S2 and Redmi Note 5 Pro. The smartphone also retains the budget pricing, which is the major USP of this model as well.
Xiaomi Redmi 6 vs Redmi 5: Pricing
While the Redmi 5 was released in three different storage options, the Redmi 6 has been announced in two storage models. The Redmi 6 is priced at RMB 799 (around Rs 8,500) for the variant with 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage. The variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage will retail at RMB 999 (around Rs 10,500).
The pricing seems to be inline with its predecessor but this time around, Xiaomi is offering more memory. The Redmi 5 was launched at RMB 799 for the base model with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. The variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage was priced at RMB 899. In India, the Redmi 5 is available at a starting price of Rs 7,999.
Xiaomi Redmi 6 vs Redmi 5: Display and Performance
The Redmi 6 features a smaller 5.45-inch display as opposed to 5.7-inch display seen on its predecessor. The HD+ display has a resolution of 1440×720 pixels, and taller 18:9 aspect ratio. Since the display is smaller, the Redmi 6 now has a pixel density of 295ppi as opposed to 282ppi of Redmi 5.
The smartphone is also getting a new MediaTek Helio P22 chipset, which is an octa-core CPU fabricated using the 12nm process. The processor is paired with PowerVR GE8320 GPU. The Redmi 5 came with Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 CPU based on 14nm process coupled with Adreno 506 GPU.

The Redmi 5 was launched in three storage options – 2GB RAM variant with 16GB stoage and 32GB storage variant with 3GB or 4GB RAM. The Redmi 6, on the other hand, comes in two storage options – base model with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage and 4GB RAM variant with 64GB storage.
Xiaomi Redmi 6 vs Redmi 5: Cameras
Xiaomi Redmi 6 brings dual rear camera setup to the entry-level Redmi smartphone. This is the biggest change coming to the Redmi 6 this year. The smartphone is equipped with dual cameras combining a 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel image sensors. The setup seems to be similar to that of Redmi S2 (also known as Redmi Y2).
The smartphone also comes with Xiaomi’s AI modes for image enhancement and portrait mode effect. At the front, the Redmi 6 retains the 5-megapixel shooter found on its predecessor as well. Technically, the Redmi 6 should produce better images than its predecessor especially in areas like pictures with shallow depth of field and portraits.
Xiaomi Redmi 6 vs Redmi 5: Connectivity and Software
The Redmi 6 runs MIUI 9 based on Android 8.1 Oreo, and will be updated to MIUI 10 later. The smartphone comes with a host of connectivity options including dual-SIM support, Wi-Fi, 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5.0 and GPS.
It gets a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and is backed by a 3,000mAh battery. In comparison, the Redmi 5 offered a larger 3,300mAh battery pack but the endurance could be the same with both the models.
