Xiaomi today took the wraps off the Redmi Note 2 and the Redmi Note 2 Prime phablets at an event in China. As the name suggests, the phablet is essentially the successor to the Redmi Note 4G, which launched in India last year. Here’s a look at how big an upgrade is the Redmi Note 2 over its predecessor.

Price: While the Redmi Note 4G was launched in India with a price tag of Rs 9,999, it is now available for Rs 7,999 after a couple of price cuts. The Redmi Note 2, on the other hand, is priced at RMB 899, which roughly translates to Rs 9,103.

Size and Weight: With both the phablets featuring a 5.5-inch display, there’s not a lot of difference when it comes to size. That said, the new handset is a bit slimmer and more compact than its predecessor. Where the Redmi Note 2 features dimensions of 152x76x8.25mm, the Redmi Note 4G features dimensions of 154×78.7×9.5mm. At 160 grams, the new smartphone also weighs less than the Redmi Note 4G — 185 grams.

Display: As mentioned above, both the phablets feature 5.5-inch screens, but there is a bump in the resolution. Where the display on the Redmi Note 4G flaunts HD (1280×720 pixels) resolution, the display on the Redmi Note 2 flaunts a full HD (1920×1080 pixels) resolution. Xiaomi also claims that it has reduced the minimum brightness on the new smartphone by nearly 10 times to help nigh-time reading.

Processor: The Redmi Note 4G was powered by a 1.6GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM. The Redmi Note 2, on the other hand, is powered by a 2GHz MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core 64-bit processor paired with 2GB of RAM.

On the storage front, the Redmi Note 2 comes with 16GB internal storage, while its predecessor came with 8GB internal memory that could be expanded using a microSD card.

Cameras: On paper both the smartphones feature a combination of 13-megapixel rear camera, and 5-megapixel front-facing cameras. The rear camera on the new smartphone though comes with a new feature called Phase Detection autofocus feature, which according to Xiaomi helps the camera focus in 0.1 seconds.

Battery: The Redmi Note 2 features a slightly smaller 3,060mAh battery, when compared to the 3,100mAh battery on its predecessor. When reviewing the Redmi Note, we found the battery to be good enough to last more than a day on a single charge. Powered by a better processor, a similar sort of battery life can be expected on the Redmi Note 2 as well.

Connectivity: While both the phablets feature 4G LTE connectivity, the one big difference is the presence of two SIM card slots on the new Redmi Note 2. While the 3G variant of the Redmi Note featured two SIM slots, the Redmi Note 4G only came with a single slot.

Software: This is another big differentiating point between the two smartphones. Where the Redmi Note 4G has been updated to MIUI 6, the Redmi Note 2 runs on Android Lollipop-based MIUI 7 out-of-the-box. The new UI brings in an improvement in design along with a bunch of new features as well. These features include facial recognition support for photo gallery, a new Mi Roaming app, videos for contacts, as well as new themes.
