Xiaomi MIUI 9 Global ROM based on Android 7.0 Nougat was announced in November last year. The company recently confirmed that it plans to release the version for at least 40 of its smartphones. While most newer devices Redmi Note 4, Mi MIX 2 and Mi Max 3 received the update, older devices like Redmi Note 3, Redmi 3S and Redmi 4A did not receive the update.

Xiaomi has now released MIUI 9.2 for Redmi Note 3 with Android 6.0 Marshmallow as the base operating system. The update indicates the company skipped MIUI 9 and jumped directly to the newer version of its custom ROM. The new update is arriving as MIUI, and weighs 290MB in size.

The update also brings the January security patch for the smartphone. According to MIUI Forum, the update is not a nightly build, and is a stable release being pushed to select set of users in order to get feedback ahead of general release. The general release of MIUI 9.2 for all Redmi Note 3 users is expected to follow in the next 2-3 days.

In terms of features, the update brings interactive and fresh UI changes including new gallery app, calendar cards and app vault. The update also brings Mi Video App, updated Mi Explorer and Mi Drop to the Redmi Note 3. While the update lacks support for split-screen multitasking, Xiaomi might add support for the feature with a future update to Marshmallow.

Other enhancements include simplified UI, reading mode than can turn on and off at sunset and sunrise automatically and redesigned homepage. The update also brings system-level fix for KRACK WPA 2 sucurity vulnerability, and fingerprint sensor issues for single user. The update also brings system-level optimization for app lock with ability to hide messages from select apps and adjusted time for lock screen notifications.

The update also makes it easier to move app icons into a folder and add widgets into an empty slot with a single tap. It also brings support to erase lines and objects while editing photos within the Gallery app. The Mi Account has been optimized to reduce the number of push notifications when the user is signed out and performance mode for game speed booster.

Xiaomi has not promised any timeline for the release of MIUI 9 update for its smartphones, but the company seems to be on time to push out MIUI 9 for most of its smartphones.
