Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 3 not only set a benchmark for affordable smartphones, it also was the most popular smartphone sold online. It offered the right mix of power and performance on a budget. Shipped with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS and later updated to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS, there is still no word on whether the smartphone will be updated to Android 7.1.2 Nougat. But for those who can’t wait for the official update to arrive, there are custom ROMs that let you install the latest, unofficial operating system right away.
Cyanogen, the once popular aftermarket Android ROM is no longer available out there, but the team behind LineageOS are working hard to fill in the gap. The team recently merged the Android 7.1.2 Nougat source code with latest Android security patch for LineageOS 14.1 ROM, and it is also compatible with Xiaomi Redmi Note 3. If you prefer stock Android interface compared to Xiaomi’s custom MIUI, here’s how you can flash the LineageOS 14.1 ROM on your Redmi Note 3 right now.

Step Three: Now, transfer these files to the root of you the microSD card.
Step Four: Switch off the smartphone, press and hold the “power and volume down” buttons at the same time until the recovery screen appears.
Step Five: Now, use the volume up and down buttons to highlight the menu options, and ‘power’ button to select and perform the task. Perform the following tasks – Wipe Data, Wipe System, Wipe Cache and Wipe Dalvik Cache. Once that is done, return to the recovery home menu and tap on install.
Step Six: You’ll now need to navigate to the LineageOS ROM on the root of your SD card, and slide from left to right to install it. Once the ROM is installed, do the same thing for GApps as well.
After GApps are flashed, reboot your smartphone. If the process goes right, your Redmi Note 3 will reboot to the latest Android 7.1.2 Nougat-based LineageOS ROM.
Do Note – If anything goes wrong while ‘unlocking the bootloader’ and ‘rooting,’ there are chances wherein your smartphone can get permanently bricked. Proceed with caution.
