The facial recognition-based authentication feature is the latest industry fad and sadly, not all devices are shipped with it. For users stuck with older smartphones, the joy of unlocking their smartphone with their face as the password is like a distant dream. However, folks at XDA have unearthed a trick that will allow users of the older Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 use Face Unlock feature, which the company recently introduced on the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

XDA developers have been able to port Face Unlock from the Redmi Note 5 Pro to the Redmi Note 4. The feature has been tested on the latest stable MIUI V9.2.1.0.NCFMIEK (MIUI9), and developer ROM 8.2.8 (MIUI9), however, the feature appears to have worked for a developer in China on the stable version as well.

As the developers explain, the mod comes in a flashable ZIP file that needs to be installed via TWRP or any other compatible custom recovery. Once you install it, you need to boot back into Android to see the feature. As such procedures require you to meddle with the out-of-the-box software, it is advisable not to run it on your primary devices.

Once you are successfully able to port the feature on the Redmi Note 4, you can head to settings and enrol your face data for authentication. Under the ‘System and Device’ tab, tap on ‘Lock screen and password’. Then tap ‘Manage face data’, and follow the steps to enroll your face information.

With Face Unlock, you can choose to unlock the phone directly to the home screen, in addition to setting it to allow unlocking when the phone screen lights up for notifications. Once the setup is complete, you can start unlocking the device using the face as password. You can either tap to wake the screen or press the power button to wake up the device before the face is scanned to authenticate.

The Redmi Note 4 is one of Xiaomi’s best-selling smartphones and features a 5.5-inch full HD display with 2.5D curved glass on top. Under the hood, it runs Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of internal storage, priced at Rs 9,999 and Rs 10,999 respectively. It is equipped with a 13-megapixel PDAF rear camera along with a 5-megapixel front camera. Connectivity options include dual-SIM support, 4G with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, USB and Bluetooth. It is fueled by a 4,100mAh battery.
