While the Redmi Note 5 Pro was the first to get face unlock, Xiaomi is now bringing the feature to Redmi Note 5 as well. The Chinese smartphone has started enabling face unlock mechanism on the Redmi Note 5 with the release of MIUI 10 Global beta version i.e. version 10.8.8.2 or newer. Xiaomi claims to have sold over 5 million units of the Redmi Note 5, the actual successor to Redmi Note 4, in India since its launch. It is no wonder that the company is bringing face unlock, one of the most sought after feature these days, to its best-selling device. To enable face unlock on the Redmi Note 5, the smartphone should be first enrolled to MIUI 10 Global beta program.
Once enabled, the Redmi Note 5 users can start updating their smartphone with the latest version of Xiaomi’s forked Android ROM. With version 10.8.8.2 or newer of MIUI 10, the Redmi Note 5 also gets an option to enable face unlock by navigating to Settings >> Lock screen and password >> Manage face data. The Redmi Note 5 users will be able to register only one trusted face at this time.
It is important to note that face unlock on Redmi Note 5 as well as Redmi Note 5 Pro relies on the front camera and does not use depth sensing cameras like the iPhone X or Xiaomi’s own Mi 8 Explorer Edition. It won’t be as secure as the fingerprint sensor and is also not likely to work that well in areas with little or no ambient light. The release of face unlock for Redmi Note 5 indicates that Xiaomi will push it to older models like the Redmi Note 4 as well.
