Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro smartphones in India earlier this year. Now, despite launching in February, which is 5 months since Google released Android Oreo, the Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with Android 7.1 Nougat and MIUI 9.2 on top. While the company has already confirmed Android Oreo update, there is no timeline on the release date yet. But, if recently leaked Beta ROM drops any clues, there’s a sweet surprise waiting for Redmi Note 5 Pro users. Google has made it mandatory for OEMs to support Project Treble for smartphones that ship with Android 8.0 Oreo and above. Project Treble is basically a modular base where Android OS framework is separated from original vendor implementation. What s the good part here? Smartphone makers such as Samsung have released Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 smartphones, but they don t bring Project Treble support. However, the new Galaxy S9 duo comes with Project Treble support out of the box. Xiaomi updating the Redmi Note 5 Pro from Android 7.1 Nougat, to Android 8.1 Oreo, along with Project Treble could enable faster software updates going forward. And other manufactures should learn a thing or two from Xiaomi.

The MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM for the Redmi Note 5 was recently leaked with Android 8.1 Oreo 8.1 and March security update. The update will likely bring dual 4G VoLTE support as well, FoneArena reports. The ROM also brings support for full screen gestures as we have already seen on the Redmi Note 5, and the new notifications shade.
As of now, Xiaomi is rolling out the MIUI 9.2 Global Stable ROM for the Redmi Note 5 Pro in a phased manner. While there is no word on when Xiaomi will rollout Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9.5 ROM, reports hint that OTA update will be released by the end of this month.
