Xiaomi s newly launched Redmi Note 5 continues the legacy, and brings the fight back to the affordable segment for the Chinese smartphone maker. As the successor to the successful Redmi Note 4, Xiaomi has a lot riding on the phone s success in India. The affordable smartphone space in India is, of course, one of the most hotly contested categories today. However, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is not without competition in the space. All three phones on comparison here sport the new and fashionable 18:9 aspect ratio. However, the screen sizes and resolutions vary in all cases. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 has the largest screen of the three at 5.99 inches, with the Honor 9 Lite and Infinix Hot S3 having slightly smaller 5.65-inch screens. While the Xiaomi and Honor phones have full HD+ resolution screens, the Infinix has an HD+ screen and is the least sharp of the three. Depending on your needs, either the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 or Honor 9 Lite has the best screen on offer here.
With the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 under the hood, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 has the best chipset on offer in this comparison. However, the HiSilicon Kirin 659 SoC in the Honor 9 Lite can be considered on par, and offers a similar level of performance for the most part. The Infinix Hot S3 has the oldest and least capable chipset of the three phones on the block, and naturally will offer the lowest level of performance.
When it comes to RAM and storage, all three phones are equal with variants of either 3GB or 4GB of RAM, and either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. You can increase storage with a microSD card in all three cases.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Infinix Hot S3 both have 4,000mAh batteries, while the Honor 9 Lite has the smallest battery of the three at 3,000mAh. None of the phones here feature fast charging. On the software front, the Infinix and Honor devices both come with Android Oreo out-of-the-box, while the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 disappointingly comes with Android Nougat despite being the newest of the three smartphones here.
While the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Infinix Hot S3 feature single-camera setups, the Honor 9 Lite offers a big differentiator in this price category with a dual-camera setup powered by a 13-megapixel primary sensor and 2-megapixel secondary sensor for depth information. The Honor 9 Lite also offers a dual-camera setup at the front, but does not sport flash for the front camera. The Infinix Hot S3 has a 20-megapixel front camera with dual-tone LED flash, while the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 has a 5-megapixel front camera and also sports front flash. Again, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 falls short of the competition in this department.
With a starting price of Rs 8,999, the Infinix Hot S3 is the most affordable device on offer among the three phones in this comparison. The base variant of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 costs Rs 1,000 more, while the Honor 9 Lite starts at Rs 1,000 more than the price of the Redmi Note 5. Essentially, all three smartphones are priced similarly. The best phone in terms of value for money entirely depends on your needs, and what you expect from your smartphone.
If you re looking for all-round camera performance, the Honor 9 Lite is your best bet. If you specifically want a good front camera for selfies, the Infinix Hot S3 will serve you well. If screen, battery life or performance (or a combination of the three) are important, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is likely to be your best option.
