Unlike in the past, Xiaomi has launched two separate devices to bolster its 2018 range of mid-range smartphones. While both can realistically be considered the successors to the incredibly successful Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, these are two entirely different devices with specific positioning, benefits and features. Naturally, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is also more affordable than the Redmi Note 5 Pro, with the former priced at Rs 9,999 onwards and the latter retailing at Rs 13,999 onwards.

We’ve reviewed the Rs 9,999 Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Rs 13,999 Redmi Note 5 Pro, and here we’ll explore the differences between the two phones. With this article, we hope to help you make a decision on which phone is better suited for you, based on the differences in the positioning of the two devices.

Design and Display

Both the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro come with 5.99-inch full-HD+ (2160×1080 pixel) screens that have an 18:9 aspect ratio. The devices also look very similar at the front, with the only immediately noticeable difference being the front camera positioning. On The Redmi Note 5, the 5-megapixel front camera is to the right of the earpiece while the lamp flash is to the left, while the Pro variant has the 20-megapixel camera on the left and the flash on the right.

At the back, the plastic antenna strips at the top and bottom of the Redmi Note 5 Pro are slightly narrower than those on the Redmi Note 5. The dual-camera setup at the rear of the Pro variant is at the top-left corner, while the single-camera sensor on the Redmi Note 5 is right above the fingerprint sensor. As such, the differences in design are basic at best, and both of these phones sport a similar design.

One of the key difference between the two phones is in this department. While the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 uses the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC as its predecessor, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is the first smartphone in the world to adopt the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC. While both SoCs are fabricated on the 14nm process, the Snapdragon 636 uses custom Kryo cores developed by Qualcomm for enhanced performance and efficiency. As a result, performance is significantly better on the Redmi Note 5 Pro, which also uses its SoC for better image processing. You also have the option to buy a 6GB RAM variant on the Pro variant.

The second key difference between the two new Xiaomi smartphones is camera. While the Redmi Note 5 goes with a 12-megapixel single-camera setup at the rear and a 5-megapixel front camera, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has a 12-megapixel plus 5-megapixel dual camera setup at the rear, and a mammoth 20-megapixel front camera. The use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC gives both of these camera setups distinct features, including portrait mode and enhanced detail processing at the back, as well as an algorithm-based portrait mode for selfies. Both phones feature lamp flash at the front.

Price and positioning

Although there isn’t much between the prices of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro, the sensitivity of this price segment and interesting position of these two devices makes for healthy competition. The more affordable Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 adopts tried and tested hardware in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 with up to 4GB RAM, enhanced economies of scale and a proven combination of performance and efficiency, and a larger screen, to offer better value to customers that want a wholesome package for not a lot of money.

However, if you are willing to spend a bit more, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro goes with the philosophy that made the Redmi Note 3 so successful. While still retaining power efficiency, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is geared towards better performance, thanks to the excellent Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC and up to 6GB of RAM. This also unlocks the abilities of the enhanced camera setups, and you’re ensured better pictures with the Redmi Note 5 Pro. For a small premium, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is the more capable device, while the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 continues to offer fantastic value for money for price-sensitive buyers.
