Xiaomi Redmi Y2, the second-generation selfie-centric smartphone will go on its second flash sale today. The smartphone was launched on June 7 and is an attempt by Xiaomi to battle its rivals mainly in the selfie smartphone segment. The Redmi Y2 will be available on Amazon India and Mi.com at 12PM.
As mentioned previously, Xiaomi Redmi Y2 is the successor to last year’s Redmi Y1 and it brings an updated selfie camera. The smartphone will take on similar devices from brands like Oppo and Vivo, which have pegged selfie cameras as their unique selling point. Xiaomi has been the market leader for the past two quarters but the past few months have seen its rivals updating their lineup to offer stiff resistance to the Chinese brand. With the Redmi Y2, Xiaomi is answering that threat by offering updated specifications and design that aligns with other Redmi smartphones.
Xiaomi Redmi Y2 Price and Offers
The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 will be available at a starting price of Rs 9,999 for the base model which offers 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage. There is also a variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage retailing for Rs 12,999. Those purchasing the smartphone online will get Rs 1,800 instant cashback from Airtel, India’s leading telecom player and up to 240GB data for free.
Xiaomi Redmi Y2 Specifications and Features
The Redmi Y2 is hard to distinguish from any other recently launched Redmi smartphones. It borrows visual cues from Redmi Note 5 Pro with a vertically stacked dual-camera setup at the rear and gains additional design elements like four-string antenna lines. The smartphone is mainly built using a plastic casing but seems premium with rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.
In terms of specifications, the Redmi Y2 sports a 5.99-inch display with HD+ resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels and 18:9 aspect ratio. The display is considerably bigger than the 5.5-inch screen seen on its predecessor and it alone warrants an upgrade. The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, similar to one found on Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 4. It can be configured with 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB internal storage.

Apart from the taller display, Xiaomi has also stacked the smartphone with a rear dual-camera setup. The Redmi Y2 is equipped with dual camera setup of 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors. The front camera uses a 16-megapixel sensor with AI beautification mode, support for HDR and LED flash. It also supports face unlock, which is less secure than the fingerprint sensor. The connectivity options include WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, microUSB port and 4G LTE.
On the software front, the Redmi Y2 runs MIUI 9.5 based on Android 8.1 Oreo and will be updated to MIUI 10 with new gesture support later this year. Under the hood, there is a 3,080mAh battery and the smartphone can be purchased in grey, gold and rose gold colors. If you plan to get a selfie-centric smartphone with the Mi logo on it then Redmi Y2 makes for the ideal choice.
