As promised, Xiaomi has started rolling out the MIUI 8 Global Beta ROM for its smartphones. Based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, the latest iteration of Xiaomi s ROM brings a host of new features and performance improvements. The MIUI 8 Global Beta ROM also brings all the goodies from Android Marshmallow such as improved doze mode to save battery, improved app permission to let you control the information shared between apps and more. MIUI 8 also comes with new calculator app with currency conversion, T9 dialler with Hindi search, gallery app with photo and video editing, integrated Caller ID and SMS ID, scrolling screenshot and more. One of the highlights of the MIUI 8 ROM is the ability to run dual apps such as two different WhatsApp accounts, Hike Messenger and more. Xiaomi says, dual app feature also supports many third-party apps too. Xiaomi has also introduced a new dual-space feature with optimizations that allow users to create separate spaces for different accounts with different passwords. MIUI 8 Global Beta ROM is compatible with a range of Xiaomi smartphones. As of now, the ROM is only available for a handful of devices in India, which includes the Redmi Note 4G, Redmi Note Prime, Redmi 2 and the Mi Max (32GB) variant. Xiaomi has also released the ROM for Redmi Note 3G, which isn t available in India. (Do note to use fastboot on Mi Max, you ll have to unlock your phone first. Follow the procedure here).
For other Xiaomi smartphones such as the Mi 2, Mi 2S, Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi 4i, Mi 5, Mi Note, Redmi 1S, Redmi 2 Prime, Redmi Note 2, Redmi Note 3 (Qualcomm variant), the ROM will be progressively rolled out in the coming weeks.
How to install MIUI 8 Global Beta ROM
As of now, the Global Beta ROM can only be installed via Fastboot update method. Follow the below-mentioned procedure to install the ROM on your compatible Xiaomi smartphone.
Step One: Head over to Xiaomi page and download the MIUI ROM flashing tool from here.
Step Two: Select the ROM variant for your Xiaomi smartphone and click the link. For instance, if you own a Redmi Note 4G, click on the link Redmi Note 4G Latest Global Stable Version Fastboot File Download or for the Mi Max, click on Xiaomi Mi Max 32GB Latest Global Developer Version Fastboot File Download.
Step Three: Once the ROM is downloaded on your PC, turn off the smartphone. Now, press any of the volume buttons and power button to enter Fastboot mode. Here, you ll see the Xiaomi mascot with Fastboot written on the screen. Now, connect your smartphone to your PC using a microUSB cable.
Step Four: Double click on the downloaded ROM (from Step Two) to extract it.
Step Five: Now, also decompress the MIUI ROM flashing tool that you downloaded in Step One and double click on install. Once the installation is complete, open MiFlash.exe. On the top, you will find an option to browse here, select the path where you downloaded and decompressed the MIUI 8 ROM. Once that is done, on the right, there is a button to flash, just click on it. The flashing tool will automatically recognize your device and flash the ROM.
Step Six: Wait until the progress bar turns fully green and says that the ROM is successfully installed. If all goes well, your device should automatically reboot upon successful completion of flashing the MIUI 8 Global Beta ROM.
