Xiaomi controls a significant chunk of the Indian smartphone market, and has done this in short time. It’s a key player even in its home market of China, and definitely a top-five contender on the global stage. And Xiaomi has done this with the quality of its phones and its aggressive pricing strategy. Naturally, phones are an important part of the mix.
Which is what makes Xiaomi’s moves to enter the US market surprising, consider its plans don’t involve smartphones. Naturally, after establishing a strong presence in India and China, it would be wise to train its sights onto the US, which is the world’s third largest smartphone market. However, Xiaomi’s first products in the US are, as you’ll be able to see on the company’s US website, entirely lacking in smartphones, which are obviously the company’s primary products.
Instead, you’ll see products such as the 10,000mAh Mi Power Bank Pro, a handful of audio products such as headphones, hands-free devices and Bluetooth speakers, some cameras, and lifestyle devices such as the Mi Body Composition Scale and Mi Electric Scooter. They are a bunch of interesting products for sure, and most of them can be bought on Amazon in the US. But where are the phones?
Xiaomi has a good product portfolio when it comes to phones, and is well placed to take on the might of Apple and Samsung in the US. Its products such as the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s are well positioned to take on some of the more successful options available in the US, thanks to interesting design and features. However, it’s possible that Xiaomi doesn’t want to invest too much into the US yet, considering the political atmosphere and the uncertainty regarding US-Chinese trade after the US imposed sanctions on Chinese smartphone maker ZTE.

Whatever the case is, it’s certainly strange for one of the world’s largest and most important smartphone makers to launch in one of the world’s largest smartphone markets without its phones. Perhaps, Xiaomi is still testing the waters in the US, and a more widespread launch involving its key products could happen in the coming months.
