Xiaomi shipped a total of 34.2 million smartphones during the third quarter of 2018. At the launch of Redmi Note 6 Pro held in New Delhi yesterday, Xiaomi VP Manu Kumar Jain shared that the Chinese smartphone maker is now the fourth largest smartphone brand in the world. According to IDC, Xiaomi shipped 34.3 million smartphones during the third quarter and managed to achieve a market share of 9.7 percent. The company had a market share of just 7.5 percent at end of third quarter last year. The Chinese smartphone maker saw its market share increase by 21.2 percent over the same period last year. This shows that Xiaomi shipped 6 million more smartphones during the third quarter compared to the previous year. Also Read - Redmi 9A to go on sale today at 12PM: Offers, price in India

Xiaomi also revealed that it reached the global target of 100 million smartphones in 2018 two months ahead of schedule. By the end of this year, the figure is only set to increase further since Xiaomi has been launching new devices at a faster pace than its rivals and has even expanded to markets like Europe and UK.

In India, Xiaomi held the first sale of Redmi Note 6 Pro today via Flipkart and its own e-commerce platform. The company announced that it sold 6 lakh units during the first sale alone. There are two more sales scheduled at 6:00PM and 9:00PM, respectively. Xiaomi’s exponential growth is not likely to slow down anytime soon.

While Xiaomi’s expansion continues with the company having dethroned Samsung as the largest smartphone brand in India, it faces fresh competition. In India, Xiaomi is now facing a new challenger in the form of Realme, a former subsidiary of Oppo. In China, the company is failing to beat Huawei and its e-brand Honor due to aggressive pricing. It needs to be seen how Xiaomi expands further in the next few quarters.
