An analyst claims Xiaomi sold 14.8 million smartphones in the first quarter of this year, less than what it managed last year.

Xiaomi has had an interesting start to 2016 with the launch of the flagship Mi 5 and the Redmi 3 Pro smartphones. While the company hasn’t revealed any numbers, a China-based analyst claims that the company managed to sell 14.8 million smartphones in all its markets during the first quarter of this year. Analyst Kevin Wang working for IHS Technology, has revealed these sales numbers, and says these numbers are for China as well as other markets, including India, which the company claims is its second-most important market globally, Android Headlines reports. There doesn’t seem to be much in terms of growth, since last year in the same period, Xiaomi had managed to ship just short of 15 million smartphones. It didn’t really pick up much pace and by mid-year it managed to sell around 35 million smartphones and ended the year with sales figures around 70 million. These numbers were short of Xiaomi’s target of 80 million.

With the launch of the Mi 5 flagship smartphone after a gap of almost a year-and-half, sales were expected to pick up pace. In fact, the company even managed to garner nearly 17 million registrations for the first flash sale in China. The company almost immediately launched the smartphone in India as well. But seems like things are not going exactly as Xiaomi planned.

Having lost its top-spot in China to Huawei, the Mi 5 smartphone is expected to help Xiaomi make up for the lost ground. While the numbers don’t seem very positive, we would like to wait for Xiaomi to announce their official figures before passing any judgments.
