After launching its accessories, and the Mi Box in the US earlier this year, Xiaomi seems to be taking the US market quite seriously. The Chinese company has announced that for the first time ever it will be present at CES 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Xiaomi will be sending out invites for its event, which is scheduled for January 5 11:00AM PST (12:30AM IST).
Xiaomi announced its plans to take part in CES 2017 with a tweet that read, “Hello Vegas! Will be coming to @CES with an all-new product at our global launch. Any guesses? Place your bets now!” The tweet also points to Xiaomi’s CES page, which comes with a description — “At its CES debut, leading technology company Xiaomi will be showcasing an exciting new product that illustrates how it is pushing the boundaries of innovation. Xiaomi was founded based on the vision “innovation for everyone” — with the belief that high-quality products built with cutting-edge technology should be made widely accessible.”

Now there’s very little that can be deduced from the tweet or the description. But looking at the kind of products usually unveiled at CES, it is highly unlikely that Xiaomi might unveil a new smartphone. The company has hinted before that it is a lot of hassle to get over the regulatory and licensing roadblocks necessary to enter the US smartphone market. Additionally, there is also the highly competitive market and the need to build a customer service infrastructure to contend with. These are some of the reasons, which has slowed Xiaomi’s plans for global expansion. ALSO READ: Xiaomi is not becoming the next Samsung: Hugo Barra
Instead, Xiaomi could unveil a new smart home product that will not be restricted to the Chinese market. Its massive portfolio already includes smart home products like air conditioners, rice cookers, water purifiers, air purifiers, and robotic vacuum cleaners among others. Alternatively, there is also a possibility that Xiaomi could launch a new Daydream-compatible virtual reality headset or an Android Wear-powered smartwatch. While this is the first time Xiaomi would be participating in CES, this won’t be its first major expo. Earlier this year, the Chinese company made its debut at MWC in Barcelona where it launched the flagship Mi 5 smartphone.
