Xolo has just announced that Xolo One will start getting OTA updates of Android Lollipop starting January 16. The device priced at Rs 6,599, was launched by Xolo in October to take on Google’s Android One smartphones.
Notably, none of the Android One smartphones from Micromax, Karbonn or Spice have announced any timeline for its Android Lollipop update. Google, during the Android One launch in India had promised that the devices will get quick software updates, but are still currently running on Android KitKat three months after announcing Lollipop.
This will also be the first budget smartphone in the sub-Rs 10,000 bracket to get the Android Lollipop update, after the Moto G (first-gen) which reportedly began rolling out the update in early December.
Sunil Raina, business head at Xolo, confirmed this news to Economic Times, and said that such a quick roll out is possible because the company has a dedicated software team handling OTA updates. “Xolo promised the upgrade when it launched the product. We have sold around 2,00,000 units of Xolo One smartphone since its launch in October last year. The acceptance of this device is too high and with the upgrade coming in, there will be more people interested in buying this device. The update will be an advantage with us,” he said.
To recap on the specs, the device has a 4.5-inch FWVGA 854×480 pixels display, and is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6582M processor paired with 1GB RAM and Mali 400 MP2 GPU. The phone has 8GB of internal storage that is expandable up to 32GB via microSD.
The Xolo One has a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a VGA front-facing camera. It packs 1,700mAh battery, has 3G connectivity and dual-SIM support. It has leather-like back cover, and is available in red, white, black and brown color variants.
On January 16, all Xolo One owners will start receiving the Android Lollipop update on their phone. Just follow the instructions and let the software install on your phone. Make sure you free up internal space and have good Wi-Fi connectivity when you install the system update. If you do not get the update on the first day, remember its a gradual roll-out, and it might take more than a day to reach you.
