Yahoo has released its annual Year in Review for 2018, which takes a look at the internet trends for this year. The Year In Review spotlights the newsmakers, stories and topics that went viral or were trending during the year. The results are based on users’ search habits and a selection of what internet users read or recommended or shared on Yahoo.
Yahoo Year in Review 2018: Personality of the year
Yahoo has selected #MeToo Survivors as 2018 Personality of the year. It says the year will be known for the collective power of India’s internet users who fuelled the #MeTooIndia movement. “Several women took to social media to share accounts of sexual harassment by men in positions of power. The movement crossed over to the mainstream, garnering huge support and mobilizing every section of the media,” Yahoo said in a release.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has become a regular on these lists, once again came in at number one. Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi was second but the surprise entry is former Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, who delivered landmark verdicts on Triple Talaq and Article 377. Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi took the fourth and fifth spot while MJ Akbar made it to the list after sexual assault allegations.
Since we are in peak Bollywood season, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have made it to the list. Priya Prakash Varrier, whose wink became viral and Taimur Ali Khan, son of Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan also joins the list of newsmakers this year.
Yahoo Year in Review 2018: Top search terms
The top searched term this year was Karnataka Elections while 2018 Budget and Aadhaar hacked were second and third respectively. Kerala Floods and Bharat Bandh round up the top five list. It was followed by Nipah Virus, Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, Mumbai rains and Anil Ambani.

Yahoo Year in Review 2018: Top 10 fake news of the year
Yahoo is going a step further this year by including top 10 fake news of this year. The list starts with the title, “Did Modi really touch Owaisi’s feet?” and second fake news also involves the PM called “Modi hires personal make-up artist for Rs 15 lakh/month”. The third fake news on the list is “Rahul Gandhi holds woman’s hand on stage” while “Is Congress social media spreading fake Rafale news?” was the fourth popular fake news. The list shows how misinformation continues to remain rampant in the country.
