Another report surfaced a month later, which claimed that Yahoo was working on a YouTube rival. While it was earlier speculated that it would be the Yahoo-branded video product, Screen, it turns out that the company has been working on overhauling Tumblr.
According to the publication, Yahoo executives favor Tumblr over Screen because of the simple reason that it is ‘social’. Tumblr has a dashboard like the Facebook News Feed and users can simply follow Tumblr blogs similar to how they subscribe to YouTube channels. Videos and other Tumblr posts can also be ‘reblogged’ for spreading ‘virally’ throughout the platform.
Yahoo acquired Tumblr in May for $1.1 billion approximately, while specifically mentioning that Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business, under the latter s current CEO David Karp s leadership.
