Google s YouTube app for iOS devices has an important update for iPhone users. The latest YouTube update brings with it an increase in the maximum resolution support for videos. Up until now, the iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 7 Plus, with the biggest display sizes of 5.5-inch had the option of 1440p resolutions for watching videos on YouTube. As for the others, the resolution stopped at 720p. With the latest update, iPhone users will now have access to watch videos in full HD and Quad HD resolution. Primarily for iPhone users with screen sizes of 4-inch and 4.7-inch will have the benefit of these amped up resolutions. The iPhone 5 series and the iPhone SE comes in a display size of 4-inch, and will now be able to watch videos on YouTube in full HD (1080p) quality. The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 7 come with a display size of 4.7-inch and now will have access to watch YouTube videos in up to Quad HD (1440p) quality. However, this new update will work on Wi-Fi connection only and not on mobile data.
As for the iPad, the resolution is still stuck at 1080p for the YouTube app, when the display resolution is higher than that. Interestingly, the 4.7-inch iPhones, with their sub-1080p display resolution can watch videos on YouTube up to 1440p.
YouTube today, also rolled out a new feature called On The Rise , which is aimed at promoting new talent on YouTube. This feature comes as a tweak to YouTube s Trending category, wherein YouTube will choose two content creators and two musical artists every week. There are several things that come into consideration however, when choosing the content to be displayed. For starters, one would need at least 1,000 subscribers on their YouTube channel, and other things like number of views, average and total watch time, and subscriber growth come as criteria for being chosen. These criteria do make sense considering the ample of emerging artists on YouTube. This feature is currently available in the US only, and there is no word on when YouTube will roll it out to global markets.
Talking about YouTube s development in the recent past, it had launched a new app called YouTube VR for Android. It is available for free on Google Play Store for download. The YouTube VR app can be used with any VR-enabled smartphone and the Daydream View headset or VR-ready headset. It will allow one to experience 360-degree videos in 3D. The app will also show regular videos along with the 360-degree videos. The app stands as an enhancer for YouTube content that can be viewed with the immersive headset.
