YouTube started support for streaming HDR videos for select Android smartphones including Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S8 and Google Pixel last year. Now, the video streaming platform is extending that support for Apple’s latest iPhone models.

A new update brings support for streaming HDR videos on YouTube on the new iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X models. Depending upon the availability of HDR content, the owners of these latest iPhone models can stream YouTube videos with support for high dynamic range on their mobile devices. One of the advantages with a HDR video over a standard video is vibrant colors and an immersive experience over a similar video shot without HDR support.

The feature, when it was introduced for select Android flagship smartphones, more than eight months ago, it did spark a lot of interest among YouTube users. It also demonstrated that YouTube content creators will soon start to offer HDR content as opposed to standard videos uploaded to the platform. At this moment, most videos uploaded to the platform are recorded either full HD or 4K format but they don’t necessarily support high-dynamic range setting.

While the availability of HDR videos is limited on YouTube, the wider availability of streaming on iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X should lead to faster adoption of the format among content creators. On YouTube, HDR works even for lower resolution videos like the ones shot in 480p and the results tend to make videos that have more detail and better color, brightness and contrast.

If you have an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X then you can start watching HDR videos immediately without having to update your application. Since the change is enabled by a server-side switch, the iPhone users will see videos switch over to HDR automatically wherever possible.

At the time of writing, YouTube’s catalog includes footage of animals, international travel destinations, food, cities and more captured in HDR format. If the video does not automatically switch to HDR then you can manually enable it by tapping on three dots icon and selecting HDR from there. The best results of HDR video can be seen on smartphones with high-resolution display and it should not be an issue especially on the Retina Display offered by all three iPhone.
