YouTube’s list of recommended smartphones for watching videos doesn’t have a single iPhone

The smartphones recommended by YouTube are called "Signature Devices"

Let’s face it – spending countless hours watching random videos on YouTube is a favourite pastime of many of us. So, it only makes sense that the devices (which, except for a few times, are always smartphones) we use for media consumption do those videos justice.

YouTube knows this too, which is why “YouTube Device Report” has published a list of smartphones that are billed as “Signature Devices”. Basically, these are smartphones that YouTube recommends for watching videos.

Interesting, right? Well, what’s more interesting is that none of YouTube’s “Signature Devices” is an iPhone. It seems that the world’s largest video-sharing service doesn’t deem Apple’s iPhones (or more specifically, their displays) good enough for video playback.

So, what exactly makes a smartphone a “Signature Device”? According to YouTube, “These smartphones can deliver the best-in-class YouTube experience by combining next generation technologies, video performance, and reliability. With a Signature Device, you can enjoy vivid HDR videos, immersive 360° video, and fast video load times – all while using less bandwidth.

To qualify as a Signature Device, a phone must support high dynamic range, high frame rate, reliable DRM performance, 4K decoding, and use next generation video codecs. We’ve worked with manufacturers to verify these devices meet or exceed our performance expectations.”

YouTube Device Report’s list of Signature Devices includes 18 smartphones, including the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

Other Signature Devices include the following:

So if you’re planning on buying a new smartphone that you intend to use for binge-watching YouTube videos, it’s probably not a good idea to get any Apple iPhone, at least according to YouTube!
