Even since YouTube Rewind started back in 2010, it’s been an interesting insight into the year that was on the Google-owned video streaming platform. The open nature of YouTube, and the ability for independent content creators to post videos easily has been highlighted, and the annual video usually showcases the big trends and creators of the year. However, YouTube Rewind 2018 has premiered to largely negative feedback, with nearly twice as many downvotes than upvotes at the time of writing.

The video starts off with actor Will Smith stating that if he controlled Rewind, he would want Fortnite and Marques Brownlee. His ‘wish’ is granted, as popular tech YouTuber Brownlee and others are seated in the flying bus ready to drop onto the Fortnite island. The video further explores various popular trends of the year, including K-Pop, the British Royal Wedding, the ‘In My Feelings’ challenge and more. The video features top YouTube content creators, including Lilly Singh, Technical Guruji and Casey Neistat, to name a few.

However, it seems that YouTube users, and particularly the Reddit community, hasn’t taken well to the video. YouTube Rewind 2018 has significantly more downvotes that upvotes, and users on Reddit are criticizing the video for being too ‘advertiser-friendly’. The video is already the subject of multiple memes on Reddit and all over the internet, and we’ve picked some for you below.

It is also being said to promote certain content creators that YouTube seems to currently favor, while ignoring the contributions of many others. From a technology and science perspective, many key creators do have a presence, and the single line by Hindi-language creator Technical Guruji will appeal to Indian users.
