Back in 2015, YouTube launched YouTube Gaming, a separate app dedicated to video game live-streams and other associated videos. The app (and by extension, platform) was introduced to compete with Twitch.tv, a popular video game streaming website owned by Amazon. However, it seems the app didn’t get as much traction as Google had hoped it would, which is why the company has decided to shutter it.

Announcing the news on the official YouTube blog, Google said that it’s merging the gaming-centric features of YouTube Gaming to YouTube’s primary website. Users can now head over to https://www.youtube.com/gaming, where they’ll see a personalized feed of content on the top of the page, curated from sources like subscribed channels, new uploads & live-streams, as well as trending videos.

In addition, the new gaming section on YouTube’s website will feature dedicated pages for games, populated with content such as popular videos, streams, and even other games created by the same developer. These pages can be subscribed to individually.

There’s more! The new gaming section will feature new and upcoming game creators under the ‘On The Rise Section’, in order to give them (and their content) more exposure.

Each week, the website will show a new game creator. The functionality is currently launching in the United States but will be rolled out to other countries in the near future.

As for the YouTube Gaming app, Google will be retiring it altogether in March 2019, once all the data has been migrated to the gaming sub-section on YouTube’s primary website.
