Nearly a year after its last launch, the Micromax-owned Yu brand returns to the Indian smartphone space. Starting out as a brand for power users, the first Yu phones packed in decent mid-range specifications at affordable prices, and also featured Cyanogen OS. However, Yu has of late gone the mass-market way offering greater value, while the company has positioned the parent Micromax brand as a more premium offering. The latest launch from the company is the Yu Yureka Plus, which has been launched at Rs 8,999 exclusively on Flipkart. The mid-range smartphone hopes to challenge existing options such as the Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Lenovo K6 Power, although does have a bit more to offer in terms of specifications. We ve given the phone a quick run through, and here are our first impressions. Also Read - Micromax In 1 first impressions: Solid competition for Poco M3
Back in black
As the name suggests, the Yu Yureka Black is available in a single color variant, a glossy black. Although this gives it a glass-like look, the phone features a metal unibody design, with the Yu logo at the back. The bottom has the micro-USB port and speaker grille, the right has the power and volume buttons, the left has the hybrid SIM tray which takes either two SIM cards or one SIM and one microSD card, and the top has the 3.5mm jack. The phone s fingerprint sensor is at the front, embedded into the physical home button. It s always active, so you can unlock the phone from standby by placing your finger on the sensor, without needing to first wake the phone. However, I found it a bit sluggish to unlock the phone, taking perhaps just a fraction a second too long.
The Yureka Black has a 5-inch full-HD screen with 2.5D curved glass and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. While the rear camera is a 13-megapixel shooter, the front camera has an 8-megapixel sensor. Interestingly, there is flash at the front and back, which will appeal to selfie lovers. On the whole, it s a fairly standard budget smartphone, but the glossy black finish and front flash help it stand out among the competition.
The Yu Yureka Black has a strong specification sheet to back it, with 4G of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (expandable by up to 64GB through a microSD card), 4G connectivity with support for VoLTE, and a 3000mAh battery. Although there is no fast charging, the sales package includes a 7.5W charger which will top up the phone in a reasonable amount of time. The box also includes a bundled headset for audio and hands-free calling, which will appeal to some buyers.
Performance is expected to be decidedly entry-level, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC under the hood. Competing devices such as the Xiaomi Redmi 4 are powered by the slightly newer and more capable Snapdragon 435 SoC, but real-world performance is unlikely to differ by much. I did find performance a bit slow at first glance. We will of course put performance, battery life and camera capabilities through more comprehensive testing, and you ll be able to read all about it in our coming review of the Yu Yureka Black.
Yu s return is Micromax s attempt to gain ground in the sub Rs 10,000 segment, which has been gaining a lot of attention in the last few months. The Yureka Plus hopes to take on the Xiaomi Redmi 4 with a combination of good looks, a unique color finish, decent specifications and the ability to take well lit front-camera shots thanks to the flash. Sold exclusively on Flipkart, the phone will offer strong competition to Xiaomi, which continues to face stock shortages and depend on the flash-sale model.
While there are minor issues we ve already had with the phone, including somewhat sluggish performance and a bit of a delay in unlocking the phone with the fingerprint sensor, on the whole my experience with the Yu Yureka Black has been positive. We ll be bringing you the full review of the phone soon, so stay tuned to BGR India.
