Online restaurant search company Zomato has rolled out a new standalone app ‘Zomato Order’ for Android and iOS users. The app is available for free, and will effectively enable users to order food via the app without the need to call restaurants.

This is the first time the company has expanded their app property and launched a standalone app to provide additional service. The new home delivery app is about 8.8MB in size on the App Store and 4.76MB on Google Play Store. In its blog, the company details on why it had to make the decision of rolling out a separate app.

“Having two separate apps allows us to build lightweight apps that get straight to solving the problems you face. Actions that are core to the app experience can be given priority of position, and we aren’t forced into making real estate compromises.”

Zomato did not want to overload its base app with too many features, that would possibly slow it down. The company claims that branching out was necessary for seamless navigation and quick results.

The Zomato Order app comes with a new mustard yellow logo. The logo has the back-seat of a scooter carrying the Zomato original logo indicating that the ‘order is on its way’. The app is simple and easy-to-use on its own. The iOS app has navigation options at the bottom, while the Android app has a pull-right menu.

The app allows you to pick the food items you want to order and confirm the delivery address in a few taps. There is also an ‘Order Status’ page, that lets you know where your delivery has reached. The company has also introduced a payments page, which is currently inactive indicating that online payments options are coming soon.

Currently, the database of restaurants that have integrated with Zomato Order are minimal, but we expect it to expand soon. In the first phase, it has tied up with 2,000 restaurants, with all of them equipped with iPads to receive and confirm orders. Additionally, both the apps are deep-linked and interconnected, therefore you will see the ‘Order’ button in the base app as well, which will then navigate you to Zomato Order and vice versa.

Zomato has also hinted that further such standalone apps are in the works. The company is also planning to launch Zomato Book in July, which will allow you to book a table in a restaurant via the app.

Zomato Order can be downloaded from the App Store and Play Store for free.
