The concept of foldable phones has been teased in the past by companies including Samsung and LG. However, we are yet to see a functional model in the market. If the rumors around ZTE Axon M (model number ZTE Z999) are anything to go by, this might be the first such phone to offer two displays. Based on the FCC listing, the ZTE Axon M will be equipped with two displays, and both will come with full HD resolution support. The dual screens will fold out to form a display which will measure 6.8-inch in total. According to Android Authority, what will make the device particularly interesting is that each of the displays on the phone will be able to run two apps at the same time. This basically means you can open WhatsApp on one display and continue scrolling through your photo gallery on the other display. Past rumors have hinted at ZTE Axon M’s specifications. According to the phone’s Geekbench listing, it could run Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC under the hood, paired with 4GB of RAM. It could be fueled by a 3,120mAh battery. It is expected to include 32GB of internal storage and feature a single 20-megapixel camera at the back. The phone achieves a single-core score of 1,677, and multi-core score of 4,130. It could further run Android 7.1.2.
In terms of pricing, the smartphone is rumored to cost $650, which is approximately Rs 43,000. If announced at a similar price, the purported device would seek to compete against the upper premium-range smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S8, OnePlus 5, and Xiaomi Mi MIX 2.
If one looks at the current market trend, manufacturers are solely focused on the camera and display technology. With the launch of the Apple iPhone 7 Plus, the dual-camera fad picked up and now we see the technology trickling down to even low-end devices. Similarly, with the Samsung Galaxy S8 duo, the 18:9 screen aspect ratio has compelled brands to build phones which are low on bezels. While it is true that phones which fold have existed (flip phones), having dual screens with full HD resolution could set a new industry trend. ZTE is reportedly holding a press conference on October 17 in New York City, and it is expected that the foldable phone could make its presence felt there.
