CES 2018: We needed reinvented laptops, and we’re getting them this year

Since the world of computers didn't add much for customer appeal, the focus of a lot of consumer expos across the globe were turning towards the smartphone, tablet, and most recently, internet-enabled and internet-connected devices.

Highlights

  • Laptops and tablets have been contended in debates over computing platforms of the future.

  • Many banked on the possibility of large screen smartphones taking the place of laptops.

  • But 2 new laptops revealed at CES 2018 indicate this space isn't dying anytime soon.

The Consumer Electronics Show has completed 50 years. We re in its 51st edition this year with CES 2018. Currently ongoing at the Las Vegas Convention Center, this year s event has already brought about some pleasant announcements after a rather sluggish couple of years. These announcements come from a segment we ve had least expectations from laptops. Also Read - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip3 launch on August 27? New report suggests

Although Apple s MacBook lineup has shown signs of a strong demand, the traditional PC platform, including laptops, hasn t been heating up as actively as the industry would have desired. Understandably, since the world of computers didn’t add much for customer appeal, the focus of a lot of consumer expos across the globe were turning towards the smartphone, tablet, and most recently, internet-enabled and internet-connected devices. This trend has been around for a few years. In 2012, Microsoft pulled out of CES. It now seems that the consumer industry has come full circle. The choice between a laptop and a smartphone

The industry has debated for long whether the future belongs to laptops, foldable laptops, tablets or smartphones that connect to docks. We ve loyally followed these announcements year-on-year, be it at CES, or at other global expos such as Computex. Even BlackBerry when it was making a last ditch effort to save its flagship lineup around the times of the BlackBerry Z10 had pushed for the idea of a mobile computing platform.

None of that made sense to the consumer industry. In fact, several other manufacturers have attempted smartphones with docks. The Nokia Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL with the Continuum dock is a classic example.

More recently, the Samsung DeX Station that was revealed last year thrived on the same idea that our world is turning increasingly mobile, and users could simply rely on their mobile devices to carry out professional work. But let s face it, we love to while away time on our mobile devices, when it comes to serious work which needs attention, granularity in terms of control, we all prefer laptops. At least I do. That s the reason this segment hasn t really collapsed despite declining sales.

Laptops are here to stay

If this year’s CES is anything to go by, then laptops aren’t going away any time soon. Around the time digital media was live and kicking, analysts predicted the death of print. It’s kind of ironic, but there still exists a thriving market for print media in today’s world. It seems to be a similar trend with laptops.

The market seems to have spoken. When it comes to real work, laptops are the device of choice for most professionals. Here’s what CES 2018 has already thrown at us.

Samsung Notebook 7 Spin

As we were getting into the groove for CES 2018, Samsung announced the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin. The product with such a funky name, also brings with it some nifty features. Keeping the usual processor-RAM-graphics capabilities in a standard laptop aside, the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is offering support for an active Pen stylus. According to Samsung, an Active Pen will be sold separately for the Notebook 7 Spin lineup.

The laptop also comes with a touchscreen, and 360-degree swivel that enables you to interact with it the way you want. It’s slim, it’s small and it’s portable. Samsung wants you to use it like a tablet when you desire one, and as a full-powered laptop when you need one.

Acer Swift 7

The other company that has managed to create some buzz in the laptop segment this CES is Acer. It announced not one or two, but four laptops. Besides the Acer Nitro 5 and the Acer Chromebook 11, the Acer Swift lineup had an interesting new addition in the form of the Acer Swift 7.

The Acer Swift 7 is already being referred to as “the world’s thinnest” ultrabook. Since portability and battery life has been a concern for long, the title helps the cause of providing the consumer market with a product that helps mobile professionals such as freelancers and sales professionals.

These are two updates and we’re still at the beginning of CES 2018. Stay tuned to BGR India for the latest updates from CES 2018. You can follow all news, views and opinions from announcements here.
