Highlights

  • The OnePlus 6 comes with a glass back design.

  • The smartphone features Dash Charge technology.

  • It ditches wireless charging as it is not a "much have" feature.

The OnePlus 6 is here, and it goes on sale today via Amazon India, OnePlus experience stores and Croma retail outlets. There s a lot going for the OnePlus 6 – it is powered by the latest and fastest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, features up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB onboard storage. But, one of the key changes comes in the form of premium glass back design. Also Read - OnePlus phones in future will continue to run OxygenOS despite merger with Oppo: Report

My friends had been asking me about by experience with the phone, but at the same time, the common thing I got to hear from them was it lacks wireless charging. If only OnePlus had added that feature, it would have been a perfect smartphone. I get it, when you compare the OnePlus 6 with the likes of the new iPhones and Samsung Galaxies, wireless charging feature is missing. But trust me, it is not a deal breaker, here s why. Glass is the new metal

Samsung switched from premium full metal unibody design to glass back with the Galaxy S6, and one of the highlights was the addition of wireless charging. Since then, the flagship Galaxy S-series and Galaxy Note-series feature wireless charging capabilities. Apple did the same thing with the iPhone 8-series and the iPhone X.

Besides adding aesthetic appeal, the glass back also helps in implementing antenna bands in a better way, which ultimately results in good network reception. When OnePlus switched to glass back, many were expecting wireless charging feature, but sadly, the feature is missing and there s a good reason for it.

Additional costs involved

To begin with, implementing wireless charging involves additional costs, both for the manufacturer and the consumer. On the company s end, some resources are to be dedicated towards development of the wireless charging tech. This also involves adding the wireless charging coil and other hardware to the smartphone, which in turn will increase its cost.

Secondly, consumers will have to spend extra money out of their pocket to buy a wireless charger, which costs anywhere between Rs 1,500 to Rs 7,000 and more. Even if OnePlus includes the charger in the package, you will still end up spending more to buy it.

Wireless charging, not a must-have feature

Speaking to the BusinessInsider, OnePlus spokesperson said, “we don’t really feel the need to add wireless charging. We’re not going to add a feature just for the sake of it.” Well, it does make sense. After all, how many iPhone and Samsung Galaxy users do you actively see using wireless charger?

Limitations with wireless charging

Wireless charging tech has a bunch of limitations. But before I highlight those limitations, there is something else to talk about. OnePlus has included Dash Charge technology on its smartphones, which is undoubtedly the fastest charging solution available on smartphones today. It takes about 30 minutes to charge from empty to about 60 percent or more, not that you will find in any other smartphone. Secondly, despite high wattage, OnePlus smartphones don t tend to get too warm while charging, like other smartphones. Thirdly, in case of other smartphones, if you are using the phone (with screen on), the charging speed is slow, which is not the case with OnePlus smartphones.

Now, these are the benefits that you get with Dash Charge. But when you talk about wireless charging tech, the charging speeds are slower compared to wired charging. Which means, while Dash Charge could quickly top up the battery, wireless charging would take over two times more to charge, something that we have already seen. OnePlus would want to offer users with the same experience, be it wired charging or wireless charging.

Also, the wireless charging pads are as big as a smartphone, and it needs a power source. Which means, you will have to carry the charging adapter, the data cable and the wireless charging pad, which is a big hassle altogether. You need to rest the smartphone s back on the wireless charging pad in a particular way. Even a small deflection here and there, the wireless charging won t work. Which also means that you won t be able to use it in a car or so.

On top of all, OnePlus is more community driven where it adds features to its smartphones with inputs from the users. OnePlus is one of the OEMs that is prompt in rolling out timely updates, which includes monthly security patches as well as major updates. Until now, OnePlus users have not asked for wireless charging feature, and it makes sense if the company doesn t implement it till it really sees users asking for it.
