The Dell G3 looks like a regular office laptop, but has the hardware needed for gaming.
You get sufficient specifications for good performance.
Battery life is decent as well.
We have had this impression for a long time that Dell is one of those companies that makes affordable laptops that come with impressive specs. And this reputation has definitely served the company well in the past. And when I first came across the Dell G3 15 gaming laptop, this thought popped into my head instantly. This unassuming laptop comes with impressive specs despite having a starting price point of Rs 69,090, and puts out a tough challenge for its competitors. We reviewed the top variant of the Dell G3 15 gaming laptop, which is priced at Rs 82,090. Here is my review of the machine, which promises performance without looking like the kind of laptop that makes such promises. Design of the Dell G3 15
Looking at the Dell G3 15 gaming laptop, one might be inclined to think that this is some regular run of the mill laptop suited for office use. Dell seems to have not wanted to go with a flashy look for this particular device and kept things simple and functional, which is also part of the reason for its strong pricing.
The body of the laptop is made from a gray-blue plastic and has a matte finish, with the Dell logo engraved in chrome blue at the back of the device. The keyboard of the Dell G3 15 has a back-light and uses the same bright blue highlights to print the letters on it.
On the other hand the device itself is not too thick at all and is only 0.89-inches at its thickest point. It does have some large bezels on all the sides of the display which makes the device look like a 17-inch display laptop when closed, while in reality it is just a 15-inch display laptop. It’s a slightly bothersome design, but one you are getting the benefit of in terms of price.
The Dell G3 15 is less about looks and more about functionality. But this by no means is an indication that this laptop feels too cheap; it has a solid build quality behind that plastic exterior. The laptop weighs in at around 2.53kg and in terms of ports and connectivity it has three USB 3.1 ports, an HDMI port, an Ethernet jack, and an SD-card slot.
The touch pad is rather basic in how it functions and is not the best I have used so far on gaming laptops. But that is of little consequence, since serious gamers tend to use a separate mouse when gaming. As for the display, it is a 15.6-inch Full-HD 1920 x 1080 resolution IPS Anti-Glare LED-backlit display which produces some crisp images. The glare on the screen isn’t a lot despite the display being somewhat shiny. In daylight, it does seem to appear a bit faded.
Performance of the Dell G3 15
The one segment where the Dell G3 15 is going to be winning the hearts of its buyers is the performance of the laptop. For its price point, Dell is offering the 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8750H Processor which is the 6-Core, 9MB Cache, up to 4.1GHz w/ Turbo Boost variant, along with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4GB GDDR5 GPU on the top-end variant of the Dell G3 15 gaming laptop. In terms of storage it uses a 128GB Solid State Drive which functions as the Microsoft Windows Boot drive and for limited use, along with a 1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive for the specific purpose of mass storage. These combine to make the laptop a very compelling package for the price.
I tested out the performance of the laptop with games such as PlayerUnknown s Battlegrounds, Fortnite, Monster Hunter World and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. And it ran all the games pretty well even on ‘Ultra’ settings. To give an example, it ran PUBG at an average of 80 FPS, Fortnite on 90 FPS, Monster Hunter World on 70 FPS and Shadow of the Tomb Raider on 45 FPS. These numbers ought to satisfy most people who are spending anywhere between Rs 70,000 to Rs 85,000 on the device.
But for those that believe in benchmarking, the Dell G3 15 scored 4,398 on PC Mark which is used to ascertain how a device would perform day-to-day tasks for an office goer. And this score indicates that it is very close to the performance of an average gaming PC and much better than a regular office PC. On 3DMark 10 s Time Spy 1.0 benchmark for games, it scored 2,377 which is better than most notebooks and close to a gaming PC in terms of performance.
The battery of the device lasted a solid 3.5 hours when gaming and being plugged in made a difference, though not as big as we have seen in previous devices. But when the device is taxed a lot it tends to heat up significantly, especially around the hinges and the top region of the keyboard which is a downside of the device.

With the G3 15 gaming laptop, Dell tries to keep its reputation as a budget gaming laptop maker intact. And it does manage to do so, with its basic looks and power-packed insides. The Dell G3 15 is a worthy investment for a gamer who wants portability on a budget, and the sacrifices are largely cosmetic.
This might appeal to a lot of people, since the Dell G3 does pull off performance capably. It may not look like a spick-and-span laptop oozing RGB lights and other decorations, but it will game like one, thus making it ideal for performance on a not-so-high budget.
