  • Six meters of HEPA interwoven HEPA filter keeps out particles up to 0.1 microns.

  • Smart tracking, an auto mode, and a remote gives you the freedom and flexibility.

Air purifiers weren t quite a thing during the years I ve grown up. Today, air pollution is a reality. Deteriorating air quality has made air purifiers an increasingly popular product in urban India. Currently, at least a handful of brands sell in India. Also Read - Dyson cord-free hair straightener launched in India: Price and features

Among the latest brand in India is Dyson, a British manufacturer based out of the rather healthier surroundings of Malmesbury, with its futuristic, and efficient air purifier. The Pure Cool air purifier by Dyson retails at Rs 39,900 on the company’s India e-store. Also Read - Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 3 Review: Best in its segment

Design

The Dyson Pure Cool air purifier brings an interesting design that occupies less space. Its footprint on floor space is just about the same as a football. It stands a little over a meter tall, and comes with a remote control. This allows you to control speed, oscillation, set a timer, and modes with the fan.

Talking about the fan, the Pure Cool comes with an interesting bladeless design. The review unit I used was the Iron/Blue variant, and given the power of colors, would depend heavily on your taste and room’s ambience. Alternatively, you could also opt for the White/Silver variant. Although Toshiba had patented a similar technology in 1981, Dyson s air multiplier system has improved upon the concept of the Coanda effect. The Coanda effect is a popular term in the study of aerodynamics, wings, and fluid dynamics. Air, and fluids, tend to stick towards the plane of flow. A simple example in everyday life is the tendency of a stream of water from a tap to bend when touched with the curve of the back of a spoon. The result isn t splashing, but a gradual, yet smooth curve in the flow of water.

In terms of a fan, the result is less turbulence in air flow. From its set-up, the Pure Cool is just a series of clicks and taps. You clip the components on to each other till they click. Next, you switch it on, download the Dyson Link app on your phone, and a couple of taps later see relevant information on your smartphone.

Capability

Compared to most other air purifiers currently available in the market, the Pure Cool filters out particles as small as 0.1 microns, which is better than competing products in the market. The purifier has ten pressure levels for air flow. It can also detect odor levels in your room, and set itself to the required air flow levels.

The lower 60 percent of air flow levels are silent. But even at top speed, the Dyson Pure Cool isn t particularly loud, thanks to its unique motor. At the heart of the purifier is a 360-degree HEPA filter. Dyson says it has woven six meters of H-13 HEPA borosilicate microfibers into every air filter. That does sound like some really cool technology, with jargon having a nice ring to it. But this also gives it the ability to filter out all kinds of particles including pollen, hair from pets, dust and as the company claims, even bacteria. The cylindrical structure enables it to have air inlet all across.

The Dyson Link app gives you real-time updates on the air quality levels, with additional parameters such as relative humidity, temperature and daily and weekly data. Clearly, Dyson has rightly identified Mumbai sweltering summer with its rising relative humidity.

A handy night mode allows for near-silent operation, with no light indicators to disturb your sleep. Besides, the remote allows you switch it to focus on peak performance anytime you feel the air is getting difficult to handle.

Verdict

When it comes to air purifiers, they re generally part of our conversations during specific weather conditions. But when you have a loved one with respiratory ailments, or a sensitive respiratory tract, the presence of an air purifier is nothing short of a blessing. Price, though, is still an important factor.

At Rs 39,900, it better be a critical addition to your home. Compared to market alternatives, the Dyson Pure Cool air purifier adds the benefit of a remote, smart data collection, auto mode that alters between silence and performance to clean the air in your room. But most importantly, its capability to filter out particles down to 0.1 microns is its best offering. If dust is all you re looking for, then a Mi Air Purifier 2 should do the job for you. You get the best value for money in the Rs 10,000 range. If health is your top most priority, and you need better control over particulate matter parameters, then the Pure Cool will serve you well.
