Huawei Mate 20 X first impressions: Big!

The Mate 20 X is a big-screened device, and Huawei claims it is a better gaming device than a Nintendo Switch. Here are my first impressions.

During the Mate 20 launch in London today, Huawei s One More Thing moment was the unveiling of the Mate 20 X. The fourth device in the new lineup is a big-screened premium device with gaming capabilities rivalling not only the Razer Phone 2, but also the Nintendo Switch. Having spent some time with the device at the launch, here are my first impressions. Also Read - Huawei Mate 40 series official poster teases the octagonal camera module

Big on design and display

Calling the Mate 20 X big is an understatement. While the overall look and feel is similar to the Mate 20, this is not meant for those with small hands or want to use a device one-handed. Also Read - Huawei Nova 7 SE new version with Dimensity 800U SoC launching on October 16

The smartphone flaunts quite a big 7.2-inch AMOLED display with support for HDR10, and a dewdrop notch at the top. The display is a quite treat for the eyes, and games (or any multimedia content for that matter) will no doubt look brilliant. The additional screen size also means the Mate 20 X is able to display more information, and reducing the amount you have to scroll.

The device is also IP53 certified, making it resistant to water and dust. It means, you can continue gaming during light rains. But the rating level is nowhere close to the Mate 20 Pro or other Android flagship smartphones.

Big on power

The Mate 20 X is also powered by Huawei s latest Kirin 980 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM. During the little time I spent with the device, there were no sign of lags even with multiple apps open in the background. On the software front, the device runs EMUI 9 based on Android Pie.

The device is backed by a massive 5,000mAh battery that Huawei says offers up to three hours more gaming time in comparison to competitors. Further, the device can also provide up to 23 hours video playback, which is nine hours more than an Apple iPhone XS Max.

Big on performance

While the device is a powerhouse, the talking point is the cooling system under the hood. Long hours of gaming or watching videos can heat up a device and adversely affect overall performance. But Huawei claims that its cooling system is built to avoid just that.

This system comprises of graphene and a vapor chamber that work together to offer up to 70 times cooling improvement. A short time with the device is not enough to comment on the system s usefulness, but on paper, it does seem impressive.

The Mate 20 X also features the same triple-camera setup as the Mate 20 Pro. The camera lenses and LED flash are arranged square-ish pattern. Going by the specs on paper, the camera performance should be on par with the top-end Mate smartphone.

Gaming experience

The Mate 20 X offers great gaming experience, which can be further enhanced using an additional clip-on controller. This accessory adds a joystick and D-Pad to the handset, providing a greater level of precision to your gameplay.

First impressions

The Huawei Mate 20 X is a niche product that seems to easily straddle different roles. It can take on gaming devices like the Razer Phone 2, while also being productive like the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Like Samsung s phablet, the Mate 20 X too supports a stylus called M-Pen.

The Mate 20 X is priced at 899 (Rs 76,400 approximately) for 6GB RAM with 128GB storage, and it will go on sale starting November 26. There is however no word whether Huawei plans to launch the device in India.
