HyperX Cloud Alpha Review: A music lover's gaming headphones

This is what happens when a pair of gaming headphones are made keeping the music lover in mind.

Kingston HyperX has created some excellent headphones since they started, some that even compared to the best gaming headsets out there, and the Cloud Alpha is definitely one of those. The HyperX Cloud Alpha was launched in March this year for a price of Rs. 10,499. I have been using the device extensively for a couple of weeks and here s my review of the HyperX Cloud Alpha. The HyperX Cloud Alpha looks similar to the Cloud II and is actually one of the lighter gaming headphones that I have tried out recently. It is a wired headset that comes with a detachable cable and microphone, which essentially makes it easier to carry around. It is in fact visibly smaller than its competition though that does not mean it compromises on comfort or the quality of the sound produced. The headband has the branding on top and is accentuated with red strings. The black and red combination of the plastic cans and the metal frame is alluring to an extent.

As for how comfortable it is to use this pair of headphones, I admit that I felt no discomfort at all even after using these continuously for a five-hour stretch. It does not clamp down on the ears too tight as well so it didn t cause any trouble for my ears even with eyeglasses on.

The cable is braided and comes with a volume control knob as well as a microphone mute button which is fairly convenient. The best part however is that the microphone can be detached which helps if you have to eat while gaming (something I often do).

The padding on the cans is consistently soft feel which is not the regular foam that we find in the cheaper headphones, and it is closer to being cotton than foam.

HyperX Cloud Alpha Performance

The HyperX Cloud Alpha is a wonderful pair of gaming headphones, period. It is neither wireless nor USB-powered but the company has gone past those to create a pair of analog headphones with a 3.5mm plug that produces some excellent sound.

Though these are gaming headphones, I tested them out with some music first, and boy, do these stand out among a crowd of other similarly priced gaming headphones. I didn t have a DAC player but I did try out some FLAC audio and the results were excellent. The pitch was balanced well and the mids, highs and lows did not overpower each other. To put it simply, I was able to perfectly make out the instruments and voice while having just the right thump.

But enough about music; now let s talk about the performance it has while gaming. I was a Counter Strike player turned Dota 2 player, who is now playing PlayerUnknown s Battlegrounds. And I tried the HyperX Cloud Alpha while playing all three and some Rainbow Six Siege, Fortnite, Assassin s Creed Origins among other games.

The accuracy of the headphones was spot on and even the distance scaling was near accurate. Counter Strike Global Offensive matches are 70 percent about perceiving the sound correctly and this helped a lot. The same goes with Rainbow Six Siege and Dota 2, though the latter doesn t exactly need much accuracy in terms of the audio. But I must admit that my biggest performance boost when using the headphones came in PUBG.

Be it in the Miramar or Erangle maps, audio is extremely important so as not to get stabbed in the back. And the HyperX Cloud Alpha was very helpful here. Miramar is about all the ridges and clear audio from the headphones helped understand if someone was approaching from the other side. Erangle has a lot of people prone on the ground and sound again becomes very important.

I got feedback from the friends about the mic and they said that this was the clearest they had heard me over a microphone. This makes the mic ideal for gaming, though it may not be exactly what a streamer is looking for.

Verdict

The HyperX Cloud Alpha is definitely one of the best headphones in its segment with excellent sound quality, build and look. Sure, it lacks USB or Bluetooth connectivity and RGB for its price range, but the positives seem to make up for it.

It’s worth recommending for its asking price of Rs 8,499 which make it a worthy competitor, and because of the accuracy it provides during gaming audio. It’s ideal for gamers who need audio accuracy, and is comfortable enough for long hours of use as well.
