As we had reported, Lenovo launched the A5 and K9 in India today. The two new budget smartphones have come a year after the Lenovo K8 Note was launched last August. Lenovo has comeback aggressively to take on the already popular Redmi series by Xiaomi. The Lenovo A5 will directly compete with Xiaomi’s entry-level Redmi 6A smartphone, which is priced at Rs 5,999.
As for the Lenovo K9, the smartphone marks Lenovo’s first four camera budget entry into Indian market. It comes with 3GB RAM, dual-front and dual-rear camera setup at Rs 8,999. I got a chance to use the devices at company’s New Delhi launch event today, and here’s my impressions of the two new Lenovo smartphones.
Lenovo K9: The 4 camera highlight for budget
The Lenovo K9 comes with dual-rear camera setup, which includes 13-megapixel+5-megapixel lens combination with AI capabilities and bokeh mode. Even the front also packs same 13-megapixel+5-megapixel setup with selfie flash. Lenovo’s VP Edward Chang during the launch event in Delhi said this is the first time Lenovo is using AI backlight and AI low-light tech in the front camera to enhance photography experience.
We could only test the camera for a very short period of time and it did a fair job in indoor lighting conditions, although we will still reserve our judgement for the final review.
Lenovo K9 and Lenovo A5: First Look
Upfront, the Lenovo A5 feature a 5.45-inch HD+ 18:9 display just like Xiaomi Redmi 6A, while the Lenovo K9 features slightly bigger 5.7-inch HD+ IPS display with 720 x 1440 pixels resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio.
In terms of design, both smartphones look very different from each other. The K9 comes with glass back design, which attracts fingerprints very easily. Lenovo says it has used double-layered glass for the protection. Coming to A5, the device looks much identical to Redmi 6A. It has matte finished back with metal coating on top. The phones fits well in hands and feels easy to operate due to its compact size.
Lenovo K9 and Lenovo A5: Hardware
The entry-level Lenovo A5 comes powered by a MediaTek MT6739 chipset paired with 2GB or 3GB RAM options. There will be two storage variants to choose from, with either 16GB or 32GB internal storage. Lenovo launched the same smartphone in China in June, and it offered only 3GB RAM variant there. Since Indian variant of A5 starts with 16GB storage, Lenovo has included a triple slot to accommodate two SIM cards and a microSD card at the same time, so you’ll be able to expand storage via microSD up to additional 256GB.
As for the Lenovo K9, the smartphone comes one 3GB RAM variant only. The handset is powered by MediaTek’s MT6762 12nm processor with 2.0 GHz clock speed. It comes coupled 32GB internal storage. The microSD card expandability is also present on the Lenovo K9, which is a hybrid SIM slot. In this segment, the handset appears to be a better offering than the competition in terms of hardware specifications, but we’ll test it out in our full review for a verdict.
Lenovo K9 and Lenovo A5: 10 Watts fast charging support
The common feature between Lenovo K9 and Lenovo A5 is the 10W fast charging support. The Lenovo K9 comes with 3,000mAh battery to power 5.7-inch display, while the Lenovo A5 packs a huge 4,000mAh battery just like Redmi 6A. Lenovo claims that battery on both phones good enough to power your device for two days, although we will be testing both A5 and K9 very soon to confirm the claim. The Lenovo K9 feature USB Type-C port, and A5 comes with standard Micro-USB port.
Lenovo A5 and Lenovo K9 seems very solid contender in sub Rs 10,000 price bracket. In our little time with the A5 and K9, both smartphones appeared great offering for its price. We liked the overall build and looks of the A5 as well as K9. The Chinese company did take some time off from India, but has now come with a bang. Both smartphones are eyeing a market that has been captured largely by Xiaomi, but having said that, we will still reserve our judgment until final review of the two new Lenovo smartphones.
The Lenovo A5 and Lenovo K9 will be exclusively available through Flipkart. The Lenovo A5 is priced at Rs 5,999 for the 2GB RAM+16GB storage variant, while the 3GB+32GB variant will be made available at Rs 6,999. The Lenovo K9, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 8,999 for the 3GB+32GB variant. As of now, the availability details are not known.
