The Lenovo Ideapad 530S is Lenovo's idea of giving its competition a tough time with some excellent specs.

Highlights

  • The Lenovo Ideapad 530S boasts of minimalist design.

  • You get powerful specs in a small package.

  • Good battery life with fast charging is another benefit of the laptop.

Lenovo has taken its hinge technology for laptops to a place where we recognize the Yogabooks by the hinges, but that does not mean that its Ultrabooks are any less impressive. And what we have this time is a little deviation from its regular routine with the new Lenovo Ideapad 530S, which could contend with the Yogabooks for a place in terms of the raw power. Lenovo s latest Ideapad 530S which launched today may be petite and light when it comes to the physicality, but it can definitely be considered a heavyweight in terms of performance. I have tested out the device and here is my review of the Lenovo Ideapad 530S. Also Read - Honor enters gaming laptop segment with Hunter V700

Design of the Ideapad 530S

The Lenovo Ideapad 530S does not have any remarkably distinguishable physical features, but that does not mean that it does not look decent. Lenovo s minimalist approach towards the design works well with the demure gray tone with a metal body that has a matte finish. The device houses a 14-inch screen with impressively small bezels and minimal dimensions.

The laser-cut edges to the panel around the AccuType keyboard looks neat. The keyboard is a very responsive one, but not for those that don t take well to the soft touch of the AccuType keys. But what I must mention is that the touch pad is better than anything I have seen on most laptops (even the high-end laptops).

The laptop weighs around 1.3 kilograms and is just 1.52 cm in thickness and this actually makes it light enough to carry around everyday. In terms of the the ports and slots available the Ideapad 530S has a full-sized HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports, a USB-C 3.1 port and an SD card reader. The ethernet port is missing on it which may make a few customers unhappy but I suppose that is a tradeoff for making the Ideapad 530S as thin as it is.

The speakers on the device are located on the bottom of the device which may hamper the quality of the audio when placed on a soft surface.

Performance

The Lenovo Ideapad 530S features the Intel Core i5-8250U processor and a Nvidia GeForce MX150 GPU along with 8GB DDR4 RAM and a 512GB SSD. These are the latest specs available but the customer can choose better specs if they so wished as optional extras, such as an i7 processor, more RAM or a better display.

To begin an analysis off the performance of the device, I must first talk about the display which has excellent viewing angles and is bright enough to look at even in the daylight. The default resolution of the laptop display is Full-HD or 1080p which seems more than enough for the small display.

I used the laptop most for the work I get done in the office, and it didn t hinder me in any way at all. But I did test out the laptop in stress conditions to see how it performed and it did very well indeed. First off, I tried playing a full sized 4K film on the device and it went smoothly enough without any frame drops.

After that I did some benchmarking with PCMark 10 and 3DMark and the results put the laptop a notch above the regular notebooks out there. On PCMark 10 it scored a 3123, which is less than halfway between a regular PC and a gaming PC that can support VR. On 3DMark it scored a 9487 which put is again less than halfway between a regular notebook and a gaming PC that supports VR.

Now to explain these results in terms that everyone will understand, the Lenovo Ideapad 530S has a better performance than any of the regular office PCs out there which can play some Dota 2 and Fortnite in medium to low graphics, but definitely not PlayerUnknown s Battlegrounds. The laptop does get heated up when pushed a lot, but that is not the case when doing regular work or playing movies, even for a while.

The other impressive aspect of the Lenovo Ideapad 530S is the fast charging capability which essentially gives the laptop enough juice for a couple of hours in just 15 mins. The battery backup is impressive as well and though it does not quite survive the touted 8 hours, it can easily pull off a 6-7 hour stretch. This is actually a very impressive number considering that it has a Nvidia GPU running on it.

The audio produced by the laptop is loud and much better than the run of the mill laptops in the market, which is courtesy of Harman Kardon. The fingerprint sensor works without a hitch and is a helpful addition because it cuts down on the time spent on entering the password every time you shut the lid.

Verdict

The Lenovo Ideapad 530S is great package of a laptop in terms of the performance and design, combine that with the pricing of Rs 87,490 (for the model I reviewed) it becomes an attractive deal. It provides excellent value for money when compared to its counterparts from Asus and Dell. The bonuses include options to upgrade and some excellent battery backup which is crucial for people who have to work on the move.
