After almost a year of being quiet, Micromax’s online only sub-brand Yu launched a new entry-level phone, the Yu Ace, in India at Rs 5,999. At this price the smartphone directly competes with the base variant of the Xiaomi Redmi 5A. YU has launched the 2GB RAM and 16GB model as of now, and it will also bring a 3GB+32GB variant towards the end of September. Initial Impressions of Yu Ace
At Rs 5,999, the Yu Ace packs some interesting features such as an 18:9 display, Face Unlock, Fingerprint Sensor, removable 4000mAh battery, dual-VoLTE and near-stock Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box. We used the device for some time, and it is quite compact for one-handed use and we feel that the Elektric blue color stands out, among the the three color variants.
Upfront, the Yu Ace packs a 5.45-inch HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio, which overall looks good for the price. It also gets 2.5D curved glass on top, so it doesn’t feel cheap at all. The three navigation buttons sit within the display like on stock Android. The good part about the Ace is the near-stock Android 8.1 Oreo interface, which only has a few pre-installed apps from the company. Yu has promised an Android 9 Pie update by November for this phone.
Inside, the handset packs a quad-core MediaTek MTK 6739 SoC coupled with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, which is expandable up to 128GB through a microSD card. As for the performance, In our limited time we could not thoroughly check the device, but having said that, our initial experience of the software and hardware combination is good for the price.
In two color variants – Black and Blue – the back is made to look like glass with glossy finish, however, if you prefer the matte finish, then Rose Gold color option would be best fit. The back is removable and you get dedicated slots for the two Micro-SIM cards and a microSD card. There is a fingerprint sensor at the back, and it worked fine for us during our time with the phone.
In the camera department, the Yu Ace sports a 13-megapixel sensor at the back, and a 5-megapixel sensor at the front. We couldn’t properly test the cameras, so for that you’ll need to wait for our final review of the phone.
Yu is making a comeback of sorts after a long break with the Yu Ace. The company has gone aggressive with the pricing, and in our first impressions, we also felt that the device looks decent value for money in online space. Yu has tried to offer better value by offering features such as Face Unlock, Fingerprint sensor, dual-4G VoLTE and a big screen with a big 4000mAh battery, all at a strong price tag.
The direct competition however for Yu Ace is Redmi 5A, which is ‘world’s largest selling smartphone’ as per Xiaomi. We will be reviewing the Yu Ace soon to be able to tell you whether you should buy it or not. Till then, keep following our website for more news and reviews from the world of tech.
