Highlights

  • The Razer Hammerhead BT is priced at Rs 9,699 and comes from a brand with a legacy in the gaming accessories space.

  • You get wireless connectivity, and the sound is tuned for gaming.

  • The headset looks pretty good as well.

Razer is known to make really flashy and attractive gaming devices that boast of cutting edge specs. And what Razer has done with its rather successful line of Hammerhead in-ear gaming headphones is make it wireless. Both the Razer Hammerhead versions that have preceded the Hammerhead BT has had some excellent feedback and been quite popular among gamers who preferred earphones. I have previously used the first version of the Razer Hammerhead for almost a year or so and was rather fond of the pair. I admit that this led me to having some expectations from the Hammerhead BT. I had a chance to use the Razer Hammerhead BT gaming headphones, and here’s my review. Also Read - E3 2021: What is it, entire schedule, how to watch livestream for free, what to expect

Razer Hammerhead BT Design

To begin with, Razer never gets the boxing of its products wrong. The Razer Hammerhead BT comes in a black box that screams premium all over. The headphones are designed to appeal to a gamers taste. It comes in Razer s trademark matte black and acid green colors.

The ear-pieces are made from the same grade aluminium that is used in the premium smartphones and you can tell just by looking at it that it has a very solid build. There are texture rings around the ear-pieces that make handling them easier.

Razer has done a rather unique thing with the collar clip for the Hammerhead BT. The clip uses a magnet to clip on to the collar at the back of the head. Now this seems convenient at first glance, and admittedly is under certain circumstances that involve a lot of movement such as jogging or working out. But the other times when you are not, it may just feel like a bother to reach back and fumble around to clip them on.

The clip is where the battery of the device is located, hence even when it is clipped on it tends to feel like a weight on the collar.

For charging, Razer has provided a gold plated USB-A to mini-USB wire which plugs in the microphone piece, that houses the volume rocker and the power button as well. Once the Hammerhead BT is powered up, the Razer logo in acid green on both the earphones light up, which I have to admit looks really cool in its small form factor.

Now before I finish talking about the design of the device I must mention that the earphones of the Hammerhead BT are a tad bit longer with the stock dual-layer earbuds. So when I first used the headphones with the stock earbuds I got a headache from the earphones delivering the audio rather close to the eardrums. This issue was easily solved by swapping out the fancy stock eartips for one of the three pairs of eartips provided in the case.

Razer Hammerhead BT Performance

Once the Hammerhead is paired the user will hear a confirmation of it and the music reproduction of the device is rather good. The reproduction of the highs is rather accurate, but the earphones are not the most efficient when it comes to those mids and lows. This essentially means that the treble and clarity is good on these headphones but the bass is not enough. Ironically this was the same issue with its predecessors as well.

But now we come to what really matters, the performance of the headphones when playing games. I used the headphones when playing Counter Strike Global Offensive and Playerunknown s Battlegrounds and the results were pretty satisfactory. The accuracy of sound location is high and so is the distance scaling on them.

I didn t feel that there was any lag in the sound reproduction from what was happening on the PC. That said, there was this one time when the headphones just randomly turned off on its own. And I just had to restart them again, but that cost me a round on CSGO.

The best feature of the Hammerhead BT has to be the battery backup, which lasted more than 7 hours while gaming at a stretch.

Verdict

This has to be one of the best wireless Bluetooth headphones at its price of Rs 9,699. In this price range there are other headphones that focus on the music, but none of those have the combination of this excellent build quality and decent music reproduction. There are better sounding headphones at this price point from Sony and Sennheiser but they don t have the build quality to rival.

But in terms of wireless gaming headphones, this is a great buy. Those that prefer earbuds and not the bulky over the head designs this is a great option. This offers the quirks of a earbud without any of the over the head weight, sweaty ears and none of the hassle of connected wires. And there are no wireless earbud gaming headphones to compete with it in India as well.
