Premium design

Let s get this out of the way first the highlight of the device is definitely the triple camera set up at the back. I will focus on the camera experience in the camera section below.

Moving to how the device looks and feels in the hand. Similar to other recent Samsung devices, there is no notched display on the Galaxy A7. Instead, the company stands firmly behind its Infinity Display design that it first introduced with the Samsung Galaxy S8.

The smartphone comes with a glass front and back, and it feels a bit broad when compared to other Samsung Galaxy A and Galaxy J series devices.

Samsung is offering the device in blue, black, and gold colors. There is no fingerprint sensor at the back or under the display. It is instead placed on the side embedded in the power button.

One thing that bums me out though is the absence of a USB Type-C port despite the pricing of the device. That and the fact that it runs Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box, months after Android 9 Pie rolled out.

What’s better than dual cameras? A triple camera setup

The reason there is so much hype around the new Galaxy A7 is because of its triple camera setup, which is the first for Samsung. The company pointed out the reason to put such an innovative feature on a Galaxy A series device instead of the flagship Galaxy S series is to make it as popular as the Galaxy J series. Interestingly, this launch comes weeks before the company is expected to launch a smartphone with quad-cameras at the back.

Coming back to the Galaxy A7, and the triple camera setup includes a primary 24-megapixel camera sensor, an 8-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide lens, and a third 5-megapixel depth sensor. For selfies and video calling, there s a 24-megapixel sensor up front.

On the software end of things for the camera, Galaxy A7 sports a number of modes including Panorama, Pro, Beauty, Live Focus, Auto, Scene Optimization, Wide angle and others for the rear camera, the front camera offered Selfie, Selfie focus, AREmoji, and Wide Selfie.

I took a couple of pictures but the lighting condition in the demo area was not stellar making me believe that the camera is likely to perform quite well in ideal conditions. From the little that I saw, the device takes good images with its rear camera.

Looking at the top spot in the mid-premium segment

Talking to the media after the launch event, Samsung India noted that it has high hopes with the Samsung Galaxy A7, and wants it to take the spot that has been occupied by the Galaxy J series in terms of popularity and demand. As an existing benchmark, the company currently has about 60 million Galaxy J users in the market, and Samsung Galaxy A7 will be a good device for an upgrade.

In addition to its internal expectations about the device, considering the features and the pricing, the device is slated to face competition from Chinese players including the likes of Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus to name a few.

First Impressions

Taking into consideration the design, hardware innovation, and pricing, Samsung has managed to get me excited about the Galaxy A7. It looks like the company is finally taking concrete steps to combat the growing threat from Xiaomi, and OnePlus. However, this is just based on my limited use of the device.

The Galaxy A7 and Samsung in extension still have to prove themselves when we conduct a detailed review of the device. So stay tuned.
