Highlights

  • The Samsung Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+ are the latest in the Korean smartphone maker's budget range.

  • The two phones sport largely the same specifications, with key differences being in the RAM, storage and rear camera.

  • The phones are available both online and offline, appealing to many buyers who prefer the ease of offline purchases and Samsung's excellent service network.

Samsung officially launched its latest Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+ smartphones in India this weekend, just days after the global unveiling. Both smartphones will go on sale tomorrow (September 25) via online and offline channels across country. We got a chance to check out these devices before launch and here are our impressions of the Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+. The two new J-series smartphones from Samsung have a lot in common. The USP of both smartphones is the large Infinity Display with a tall 18.5:9 aspect ratio. Upfront, both phones feature a 6-inch Infinity Display with HD+ (1480 720 pixels) resolution and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The overall design, size and weight feels similar to that of the Galaxy J4 and Galaxy J6. Also Read - Galaxy S21 FE to support 25W charging but will Samsung put it in the box?

I really like the build quality of the Samsung Galaxy J4+ and J6+. The phone appears to have a glass back, although it is just a glass-finish polycarbonate rear plate. Samsung has done a good job with finish and both phones feel premium in the hand. The rounded edges give the phone good grip, although you’ll see a fair amount of smudging at the front and back unless you use a protective case. We did check out the different colors of the phones as well, and the red color on the Galaxy J6+ looked the most striking of the lot.

Samsung Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+: Processor, Performance, Cameras and Battery

Even under the hood, both the Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+ pack the same chipset from Qualcomm. Both are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC, although the difference is in RAM and storage options. The Samsung Galaxy J4+ comes with 2GB of RAM and 32GB onboard storage, whereas the Samsung Galaxy J6+ comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.

The phones also include dedicated microSD card (up to 512GB) support so you need not worry about additional storage. You’ll be able to install apps on the microSD cards as well, along with two Nano-SIM cards in use simultaneously. The phone supports dual-4G VoLTE, which means both SIM cards can operate on a 4G network at the same time.

We haven’t used the device enough to comment on performance, and will do so in our full review of the two phones. We did check out the Face Unlock on both devices and it felt quite slow. The fingerprint sensor will only be on the Galaxy J6+ and it is side-mounted on the power button. This felt slow as well, during our time with the device.

As for another similarity between the Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+, both also pack the same 3300mAh battery inside. There is no fast-charging support on the two phones, and these come with 5V/1A two-pin chargers, which might come across as particularly slow considering that most phones in this price range come with 10W charging now.

For photography, there is a difference in the two smartphones. The Galaxy J4+ packs a 13-megapixel f/1.9 rear camera accompanied by a LED flash. For selfies and video calling, there s a 5-megapixel f/2.2 front camera.

The Galaxy J6+ on the other hand comes equipped with dual-camera setup at the rear, with a 13-megapixel primary and 5-megapixel secondary depth sensor. The front camera is also a higher resolution 8-megapixel camera on the J6+. Both smartphones cameras include features such as Background Blur and Dolly Zoom for social media enthusiasts.

On the software front, the dual-SIM Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+ smartphones run Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box with Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI. Samsung hasn’t commented on plans to roll out Android 9.0 Pie on these devices yet, but it will likely take a while if at all.

Samsung Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+: Final Thoughts

Both the Samsung Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+ look refreshing and come with new colors and a premium, glossy design. Samsung has its market offline for these two devices and its loyal consumer base will enjoy the same reliability that Samsung has been known for. Having said that, the two phones will get tough competition online with the likes of Asus, Honor and Xiaomi giving superior features and specifications at the same price.

The Samsung Galaxy J4+ is priced at Rs 10,990, while the Galaxy J6+ is priced at Rs 15,990. The Galaxy J4+ will be available in three color options: black, blue, and gold. The J6+ will be available in red, blue and black. As a part of the launch offers, Samsung is providing a one-time screen replacement at Rs 990 to buyers purchasing both smartphones till November 11, which will appeal to users who are worried about damage to the phone.
