Highlights

  • Vivo V11 Pro is priced at Rs 25,990, and available via Amazon India.

  • It comes with AI dual cameras, waterdrop notch and face unlock feature.

  • V11 Pro is the first mid-range smartphone to come with in-display fingerprint scanner.

Over the past one year, smartphones have seen changes in the display department. Right from the entry-level models to the top-end ones, an edge-to-edge display has now become common. But just offering a bigger display, larger battery and powerful hardware isn t enough. India is a major market for budget and mid-range smartphones, and manufacturers are now bringing premium experiences to these devices. Today, Vivo launched the V11 Pro smartphone in India. The V11 Pro is priced at Rs 25,990, and it will be available from September 12. One of the key highlights of the smartphone is that it offers a tiny waterdrop notch, giving a near full screen experience. It is also the first smartphone in the mid-range segment to offer an in-display fingerprint scanner. I ve been using the smartphone for a couple of days now, and here are my first impressions. Design

The Vivo V11 Pro, despite having a 6.41-inch display, is sleek and has a compact form factor. The front is dominated by a full screen display with a tiny waterdrop notch which houses the selfie camera. This implementation is better as it offers more screen space on both the sides of the notch. The earpiece is located right above it, but it is so tiny that you won t easy notice it.

Glass back is becoming common with flagship smartphones as it adds to the premium look and feel, and now manufacturers have started adding them on mid-range devices too. The Vivo V11 Pro has an arc design with contours on the sides, making the smartphone easier to fit in your palms. The smartphone is sleek too, making it easier to use with one hand. But as in case with most glass back designs, it becomes quite slippery, and you need to be extra careful when handling it.

Huawei P20 series won accolades for the cameras, but the glass back design with gradient finish was something appreciated by users and critics alike. Vivo has also added a gradient finish where the top half has black color, and bottom half changes color and reflects light based on the angle you look at it. I m pretty sure users will love showing off the gradient finish. But then, the glass attracts a lot of smudges, you will need to clean it time and again.

Security

Even an entry-level smartphone like the Redmi 6A now comes with face unlock, and Vivo has been adding it in a lot of its devices, including the V11 Pro. But the highlight of the smartphone is its in-display fingerprint scanner, something that we have not seen on a mid-range phone yet. It is commendable that while Vivo is bringing these premium experiences to mid-range devices.

Setting up the fingerprint scanner is a bit slow. Also, the in-display fingerprint scanner is not the one that covers the entire bottom half, but a select region. So, you need to be specific where you place your finger for the scanning to work. It works well, but more on that later, when I thoroughly review the smartphone.

Specifications and software

As mentioned above, the smartphone comes with a 6.41-inch full HD+ Super AMOLED display, which is good to see as it offers punchy color reproduction, saves on battery life, and enables always-on display too. Under the hood, you get a Snapdragon 660 SoC with an octa-core CPU, paired with 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage. There is also a dedicated microSD card slot for expandable storage, which is a good thing.

In the photography department, the Vivo V11 Pro comes with AI dual cameras at the back, where the primary sensor is of 12-megapixel resolution, and the secondary sensor is of 5-megapixel resolution. The AI enables scene detection to optimize the photo quality. Up front, the smartphone comes with a 25-megapixel selfie camera with AI portrait mode and beauty mode to make you look good in your selfies.

With dual SIM card slots, 4G VoLTE support, the smartphone comes with connectivity options such as Bluetooth, GPS and microUSB port. To keep things ticking, the smartphone comes with a 3,400mAh battery, with dual fast charge tech, and the company has bundled an 18W charger in the box too.

In the software department, the smartphone comes with Android 8.1 Oreo with FuntouchOS skin on top. It has a single layer UI, meaning there is no app drawer. The FuntouchOS also supports gesture navigation, enabling you get rid of the Android navigation bar, thus creating more screen real estate.

First impressions

Overall, the Vivo V11 Pro looks like an interesting device in the price segment. Yes, it does bring in-display fingerprint scanner which is innovative, the glass back design with gradient finish makes the phone look premium. Also, the waterdrop notch looks like a good implementation compared to all other notches out there. But eventually, what matters is the performance.

In the price segment, V11 Pro will compete with the likes of Poco F1 which offers top of the line hardware for a fraction of price compared to flagship devices. There is also the Samsung Galaxy A8 star which is an online exclusive smartphone with dual cameras, glass back and more. With the competition in mind, does the V11 Pro make for the good purchase? We will soon come out with our detailed review of the smartphone, till then, stay tuned.
