From childhood memories, what stands out is the time between Diwali and Christmas where it gets chilly on the way to school each morning. The nip in the air was the cause for woes and excitement in the same measure. Apart from dry arms and doodling on it with your nails (and of course discovering moisturizers), it’s also associated with the change of the year. You find yourself in a new year at the end of the season. Like light at the end of the tunnel.

When I talk to my friends from North India, they share their memories which involves excitement around certain sweet dishes, richer food, but also planning vacations. Households would indulge in a massive cleaning ritual prior to the setting in of winters. That’s more prominent in the hilly areas where it can get really cold. They would bring out their beddings to get some sunny heat and rid of any moisture that may have seeped in. That apparently helps prevent neck aches and a frozen shoulder. Indians across the corners of the country have deep memories of some sort associated with winter. That’s changing now. Unfortunately.

The stress of winter

While earlier the only stress high schoolers had was surviving their mid-term examinations, students now have graver challenges. I’m referring to dust allergies. Smog and pollution levels across the key cities and metros in India have risen to alarming levels. The impact is only projected more often from the Delhi NCR, but Mumbai, which claimed a holier than thou position, is no different. This immediate real impact of climate change has made the air purifier segment a very important one in India. I’ve been using the Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 2S for months now, and here’s my review of it.

If you just looked around, you’d see visible dust and cloudy environmental conditions around. The reality is scarier. We tend to get alarmed when we ‘see’ or notice the allergen. But there’s no way you’d be able to see particulate matter. They’re measured in microns. What you see as cloudy and dusty air is the amalgamation of millions and billions of particles over a large geographic spread. I’m sure you’d agree; something needs to be done.

Every year, in the pre-winter phase, we debate about all kinds of potential causes of the situation. But the smog doesn’t seem to loosen its grip on us.

It’s been a while since Diwali, and the environmental condition with quality of air hasn’t improved in the Delhi NCR region. In fact, even cities like Mumbai are showing an increase in pollution and levels of particulate matter.

The new first line of defence

Masks or just a plain simple handkerchief would seem the appropriate first line of defence when it comes to air pollution. But let’s get real, unless you’re always wearing it, it’s simply impractical to rely on masks indoors. That just covers your commute and the time you spend outdoors. What about when you’re sleeping at night, during the time pollutant, and dust density levels in the air is at its highest?

Time to get an air purifier

The past couple of years have sensitized Indians about the need for air purifiers. If you’re having trouble breathing this winter, a good step forward would be to get yourself an air purifier. This segment now has a vast range of products across price segments. What’s strongly emerging though, is the near Rs 10,000 price point. And that’s precisely where Xiaomi is operating. For the price of a budget smartphone, you can clean up some of the world’s mess, so it doesn’t impact your health (at least when you’re at home). In the process, you and your loved ones at home can breathe at ease.

The mechanism

Not a lot has changed in the Mi Air Purifier 2S as compared to the previous generation Mi Air Purifier 2. Apart from the usual brushless DC motor that can operate silently, there’s the addition of a small display that gives you real time information about the level of particulate matter. Although it doesn’t offer as much information as the much more evolved and pricier Dyson Pure Cool, you can get updated details of particulate matter levels on the accompanying Mi Home application on your Android or iOS smartphone.

The Mi Air Purifier 2S carries on with the Xiaomi design, which uses a dual rotor blade turbine design to displace air vertically in the room. There are two ways to look at it. One: you don’t find air directly thrown towards you and hence reduces irritation for sensitive individuals with an irritated throat or nose due to air flow. Two, you can’t use it as a fan, which other competing products such as the Pure Cool offer.

The filter

The Mi Air Purifier 2S implements an H11-grade HEPA filter, which can offer protection from particulate matter PM2.5 or particles with a diameter of approximately 2.5 microns. In contrast, it is widely accepted that the human hair can vary between 17 to 181 microns. In addition to the HEPA filter, a layer of activated carbon helps deal with the strong odour of formaldehyde during painting.

The filter in the Mi Air Purifier 2S comes with a warranty of 6 months. However, you will see information regarding the remaining life of the filter on the display, as well as the Mi Home app. You can order a new filter from the Mi app.

Verdict

The air purifier category is a new one to India. Ever since the air pollution scare hit its peak a few years ago, brands such as Xiaomi, Honeywell, Samsung and now Dyson among many others have been pursuing market share growth in this segment aggressively. Since there’s a vast choice in the market, your preferred choice depends on you precise objectives. If it’s more specialised where you want real-time data, and are particular about the kind of particulate matter being purified, then one of the higher end products by companies such as Samsung, Dyson or Philips would make sense.

However, if you’re someone like me, where the discomfort caused by smoke, dust and smog trouble you, without a strong medical condition to immediately concern you, then the Mi Air Purifier is truly your first line of defence against all the problems you want to avoid from the heavy smoky winter nip. As you discover how an air purifier can revive your quality of life, it helps to have not spent a fortune in buying one. The Mi Air Purifier 2S has all that you need to improve the quality of air at home, and you’d not regret buying one. What’s important to note, if you do buy this, is that you have an insulated home, where you don’t have external air leaking in through broken windows or ventilation holes in the wall.
