The Supreme Court today sought response of the Centre and telecom regulator TRAI on a PIL filed by an NGO challenging grant of 4G licences to Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. A bench of Justices H L Dattu and S A Bobde issued notice to the Centre, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and Reliance Jio on the petition of NGO, Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), which challenged the government's decision to allow Mukesh Ambani's company to offer voice services on its 4G spectrum.

Smartphone shipments rose in Q1 of 2014, driven by strong demand in emerging markets, availability of low-cost devices and the proliferation of 4G networks, even as reduced consumer spending after the holiday season affected handset sales, according to research firm IDC. Global smartphone sales grew 28.6 percent to 281.5 million units in January-March, accounting for over 60 percent of mobile phones sold, the International Data Corporation (IDC) said. Sales were 218.8 million units a year earlier. However, shipments were down 2.8 percent from 289.6 million units in Q4 of 2013, IDC said.

Reliance Jio is reportedly planning to open 2,000 Digital Xpress Mini outlets for providing the company s forthcoming telecom services and devices including smartphones and tablets, and also peripherals from third party vendors. Reliance Jio will launch these outlets in the current fiscal year to sell the company's telecom services including mobile phone and 4G LTE Internet services through these stores, each of which will be about 250 square feet, ToI reports.
